Said Jessica, "He was born very prematurely, just 23 weeks, so as a result, he has quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy and one of our goals for William is to get him walking." They were in the PVC aisle and had the good fortune to run into employee Dave Urban. Or maybe it was the other way around. The couple showed the list to Dave, and as he watched William in his wheelchair and began to understand just what the purpose of the materials would be used for, something vibed deep. "I thought I would just be finding some fittings, making a couple cuts and I saw Will and I found out what we were building." And decided there and then, filled with purpose, to not just find the materials, but cut and install and build the entire set, to make sure it all went well with no mistakes. And was able to accomplish in a half hour what would have take the couple the afternoon. Said Mark, "It was evident that it meant a lot to Dave, too, because he started to tear up, as we were, as he was building and it was just really cool.” Said Dave, "Then came the test. Will got up, out of his wheelchair and grabbed a hold of those bars. I think you saw that courageous smile of his. Sense of pride, it keeps getting me." Now at home, William has used the bars to help pull himself up and stand, to walk forward and to move side to side. Said Jessica, "It was just kindness that touched us and really meant the world to us." Said sister Olivia, "I just think that Dave was really nice to help my little brother build these things to help him walk." Dave summed it up nicely, "Just go the extra mile and it may reward you 100 times back." Just a half hour, or a moment, of empathy and concern and kindness can change and brighten someone’s world. Sometimes especially even your own.
