Ghana- One of Our Little Babies [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-08 I’m going to write a full story on this on Monday if I can, but I thought y’all might like to see one of our little babies in Ghana. His name is Melbourne (there is a story behind the name, but as I said, Monday….) Little Melbourne is about a year and a half old. When he was born John helped the parents pay for the hospital bills so they could be released (the hospitals are very wicked about that there; if you can’t pay they do not let you go home until you do, and it can get ugly) and then we helped the with the naming ceremony. After that we more or less lost touch with them but recently we have found that the father, Collin, is serving a year in prison for driving a taxi with an expired license. He has about four months to go before he is released. I wish he had told us that he needed help to pay to renew his license. We would have tried to help. But what is done is done. I give him credit for trying to support his family but of course the legal system is without mercy (unless you are rich or otherwise connected.) In the meantime the mother, Agnes, is struggling. She is trying to take care of baby Melbourne and she also has another son and a daughter. It is hard times. When my grandfather was alive, during the Depression, the teen daughter of one of his friends was dating the son of the local mayor. Her father thought the son was bad news and tried to break them up. The boy got his daddy mayor to throw my grandfather’s friend in prison. While he was there his other children starved. Literally. The boys wound up in wheelchairs from rickets and died in their early twenties. This is not going to happen to the children of Agnes and Collin. Anyway I will tell more on Monday. There is a special reason I am waiting until then. God bless.
