Police will kill you for showing up at the wrong house [1]

This is not really a “new” way to die by police violence, merely adding to an already established way to be murdered by public servants.

The gist of it is that police showed up at the wrong house while trying to respond to a domestic violence call. The homeowner opened the door with a gun in his hand, and was subsequently murdered by police. Who knows what happened in the residence where the call for police assistance actually came from. Now, the murdered man had every right to open the door to his home with a gun in his hand. The news article does not mention whether he was aiming it at police or not. The article also does not mention whether he fired the gun or not, so I assume that he did not.

It is long past time to take guns away from police, at least until a known violent situation is ascertained to be beyond police management. It is also long past time for police officers to be sent to prison for any manner of violent actions up to and not limited to murdering people in their own homes. Police murder people all the time, with guns, with knees, by piling on top of the person, and who know by how many other methods. Police murder people by showing up at the wrong house, by showing up at the right house, for being naked in the street, while being clothed, for driving too fast, for driving too slow, for driving, for running away, for running at them, for not responding, for responding but not in the way the officer wanted, while in police custody at the police station, while not being in police custody, and for any other reason you can think of.

I am a white man, and i have very little to fear from the cops. In fact i had an interaction with some today b/c i was parked at my office building and they didn’t recognize my car. They called dispatch with my name and info and it was all resolved without issue. However, my position of peak privilege protects me in ways that other people do not get. That disparity in treatment is what must end. I am not advocating for the police to murder more people who look like me. I am advocating that police not murder anyone.
