The Inoculation Project 4/9/2023: South Carolina Books and Chickens [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-09 Last week we made good progress on this project (see the thank-you section below!), so this week it moves up here. This little South Carolina town has families with many different first languages, and Ms. McElroy wants books her students can take home and read with their family members! PROJECT #1 Project: More Bilingual Books Resources: Help me give my students bilingual books so they can read with family members at home. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Brockington Elementary School, Timmonsville, South Carolina Total: $349.58 Still Needed: $ 221.69 Completed, thank you! Please consider Project #2 #3 below. Project description by Ms. McElroy: I work with a wonderful group of multilingual learners by collaborating with classroom teachers and supporting students in their classrooms. I also pull out small groups to teach specific skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The bilingual books that you are helping to fund will help my multilingual learners progress in the English language. These books will help my students improve their language acquisition and academic performance. It is important students maintain their native languages so that they can continue to benefit from being bilingual. My students will be allowed to take these books home allowing them to read with their parents and other family members. Each student will be excited to be able to read with their family members. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! x YouTube Video x YouTube Video This never-before-funded South Carolina kindergarten teacher would like to give her students a chance to see chickens hatch! PROJECT #2 Project: Hatching Baby Chicks Resources: Help me give my students the real-life opportunity to learn the life cycle of chicks with a brooder box, 12 egg incubators, and chick water feeder! Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Robert E Cashion Elementary School, Greenville, South Carolina Total: $286.15 Still Needed: $ 236.15 Completed, thank you! Please consider Project #3 below. Project description by Ms. Caulder: This year I have a classroom full of 20 energetic kindergarteners that love learning and soaking up information about animals. My students expressed an interest in having a class pet and learning how to take care of an animal. With spring coming up, I thought what a wonderful experience it would be for my students to have the experience to hatch baby chicks, watch them grow, and learn how to take care of them. These materials will help me teach about the life cycle of a chick, the responsibilities of taking care of an animal, writing nonfiction texts about our chicks, and giving them a real life experience that they may not have the opportunity to have. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! x x YouTube Video I don’t usually toss in a third project, but our two today were completed so early, and this one’s time is getting short, so it’s perfect to maybe toss in a donation or two and wake up the DonorsChoose bots. Some fun-looking math-oriented games are requested. PROJECT #3 Project: Hands On Learning Is Fun Resources: Help me give my students hands on learning experiences for all academic levels. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Fox Meadow Elementary School, Jonesboro, Arkansas Total: $166.94 Still Needed: $120.47 Project description by Mrs. Goodwin: One of my favorite parts of teaching is getting to watch my kiddos learn and grow through social learning. One of the ways that I let my kids learn socially, is through "center time". This is a time designed to give them opportunities to use their imagination along with what they are currently learning in the classroom. It is amazing to get to sit back and watch them use their unique minds and create and learn together. Hearing the conversations between them during this social time is always so rewarding, and the requested magnetic dinosaurs, the penguin ice blocks, the burger sequencing game, and number bots will be key to their learning at their centers. I always am amazed to see how much they need and crave this opportunity to learn and grow socially. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Lots of thank-you news today! First of all, our main project from last week was completed, with plenty of help from out readers! Project #1, Rainforest Habitat Classroom Transformation: Ms. Lundquist was hoping to give some oomph to her Virginia second-grade lessons on habitats, by creating an exciting ‘station’ where students can explore the tropical rainforest. She writes: Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! My students are going to be absolutely thrilled to come to school and explore the rainforest! I cannot wait to watch students make observations based on the animal models and images present in the tapestry. They are going to be so excited to use the binoculars, and I already own explorer hats for them to wear! They are going to have such a fun time learning, and it is all thanks to YOU! So thank you so much for supporting my sweet 2nd graders! 💕 Then, two weeks ago, our Mississippi project, So Many Books, So Little Time, was completed later in the week, and Ms. Roberts had not yet learned about it by the time we posted last week. Here’s her note: I cannot express enough how grateful I am for your support. Your contribution has not only benefited my students' academic growth, but it has also encouraged their love for reading and learning. It is because of people like you that my students can enjoy a well-rounded education and have access to resources that will help them succeed in the future. Once again, thank you for your kindness and generosity. Your contribution has made a difference in the lives of my students, and we will always be grateful. Finally, our current project More Bilingual Books isn’t even completed yet, but this week I received a very kind kosmail about it from the DK Staff account: [Subject:] A Thank You from one of your sponsored teachers :) Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that one of your sponsees came to Help Desk to say thanks. ---------------------------------- "Hello! I am a teacher in SC. I have received donations to my project where the donors have said they have read about the project on your site. I just want to say thank you for promoting my project. I appreciate your support. [link] Getting closer, bit by bit!” ------------------------------------ Thanks to you and nomandates for your valiant work over the years. <3 DKS I thanked Daily Kos in return for hosting us all these years, and as always, I thank you too! DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required! Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1025! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
