To trust or not to trust, that is the question [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-09 "I’m not upset that you lied to me, I’m upset that from now on, I can’t believe you." ~ Friedrich Nietzsche April 10, 2023 Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy 2468 Rayburn House Office Building - Washington, DC 20515 Phone: 202-225-2915 – FAX: 202-225-2908 Speaker McCarthy; Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has lifetime tenure and is not subject to discipline short of impeachment, so why would he fail to honestly report millions of dollars or more in gifts that included cruises on a private yacht, flights in private jets, vacations at resorts and even all-male retreats (in-kind contributions?) given to him and his wife for more than two decades by Republican megadonor and influencer Harlan Crow? Many in America now justifiably question whether they can trust a Supreme Court justice whose judgment is so self-indulgent he would claim that unnamed "colleagues and others in the judiciary…advised that this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court, was not reportable." Others wonder if Justice Thomas simply doesn't care about ethical standards or, worse, has something to hide. If you believe that the American people have an implicit right to trust Supreme Court justices who have the unmitigated power to establish legal edicts that will impact this and future generations, shouldn't you and your Republican colleagues in the House majority immediately move legislation forward to require a specific, nonpartisan code of judicial conduct to bring the Supreme Court in ethical line with the federal judiciary? If you don't, you won't, and the voters will question whether they can trust your judgment. Won't they?
