I want there to be a conservative party! [1]

George McGovern once said, in the 1980s, I am glad there is a Republican party, but we don’t need two of them. His point was that the triangulating strategy of the then Democratic party was a mistake. He was right. But nowadays we have a different threat.

The threat is not from Democrats becoming more like Republicans, though there are always a few exceptions. The threat is that the Republican party was not the party McGovern was thinking of in 1984. Back then, and i was a weird kid watching c-span, there was a kind of Republican who was basically “yeah, this sounds nice, but what about ulterior consequences? what about the cost?”

Right or wrong, those sorts of sentiments are genuinely conservative. But what we have now to is not a conservative party opposing progressives, we have a reactionary party, a party that does not want to merely caution that further change may have unexpected consequences, but one that wants to undue the progress we made in the 60s, in the 30s, and hell even reconstruction.

It is good to have competition between rival views. it is important that even the progressive reforms I support are open to criticism. But that is not what we have now. we have denial and fake news instead.
