I’m not going to post the whole tweet because of the video, but here’s Dmitri’s description: A video circulating in Russian channels with a Ukrainian M113 which allegedly drove on a mine. Wouldn't have posted it otherwise, but the Russian soldier filming is saying that the bodies of fallen soldiers were stripped of boots but also beheaded, and their arms were removed as well... I won't be translating this but the man is approving of these actions. This is not just a war crime. It’s barbarism. ---------------------------------------------------------------— Further evidence that if you live in Russia you are on your own. You exist to serve the government, not the other way around. x Putin thought Russia would take Kyiv in 3 days 14 months later, young Russians are hiding in their basements in Belgorod, Russia as the Ukrainian Army shells Russian Army positions in the region They say the authorities won’t answer their calls for helppic.twitter.com/BUhWKIly4C — Visegrád 24 (@visegrad24) April 8, 2023 The video above is sad on a number of levels. This woman is scared. All she knows is that she has to hide because Ukrainians are bombarding targets in her region. She likely doesn’t know why, other than what she hears on TV or from other people. She knows the government isn’t lifting a finger to help. In most countries that would trigger protests. In Russia protesting gets you thrown in prison so you are left with frustration and self-imposed silence instead. There are still some people trying to get the truth out. They do so at their peril, as Vitaly Votanovsky discovered when he started documenting the deaths of Wagner mercenaries and others buried at a huge cemetery near Krasnodar, a Russian city directly east of the Kerch Strait at Crimea. Krasnodar is said to be famous for a steel-latticed water tower and a beautiful cathedral. Now its famous for its huge war cemetery. When Votanovsky began posting what he found about the numbers of dead being buried there, he began receiving death threats. The activist says the final straw came last week. "I was walking past a police station in Krasnodar and a police officer [recognised me]. He said 'Get ready. It's coming.' He meant the state's reaction [to]…interviews I was giving. They already had enough to open a serious criminal case against me." Vitaly escaped to Armenia, and now plans to request political asylum in Germany. I ask Vitaly why the authorities don't want people like him publishing information about Wagner and about Russian casualties in the war. "For our state these are terrifying statistics," Vitaly claims, "and the Russian people just don't know the true numbers. I wanted to show people the real scale of the disaster. "If people were to find out the true numbers of battlefield losses, they'd go crazy."
