School District Closed Due to Internet Shutdown [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-11 My grandkids next door told me on Saturday they wouldn’t be going to school on Monday, after their 3 week spring break. The internet was down… The Rochester (MN) Public School District Superintendent Kent Pekel said in a video posted Saturday evening that RPS “detected unusual activity on our school district’s technology network” on Thursday, April 6. Our local newspaper the Post Bulletin reported on April 8th: “In response and out of an abundance of caution, we shut down our network and almost all of our core technology systems,” Pekel said. While staff have been working with third party experts to investigate the situation, no further details were revealed about the nature and extent of the activity. Pekel asked students not to report to school Monday because the schools need time to plan how to operate without access to the Internet and core systems. Students will be back in class Tuesday, April 11. “All staff are required to report to their schools for a meeting at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 10, to plan to hold classes and provide all student services starting on Tuesday,” Pekel said. So one of my granddaughters came over after school today to tell me that her teacher pulled up a video on his personal phone and put it under the overhead projector to have the kids watch it. My next door neighbor teaches High School Spanish and wasn’t sure what he was going to do because his textbooks were all e-Books. My daughter explained to me that the classrooms phones were all VOIP phones and that even though teachers may have use of their personal cell phones there were still safety concerns in case of an emergency. Apparently the internet is not just for learning but for safety... Before Covid shut down schools, we wondered how our kids were going to learn remotely. Now we wonder how they are going to learn without internet access in the classroom. We still haven’t heard what the unusual activity was.
