The pictures are still intact. Amayi was floating in the Animas River with some friends in 2010 when she fell off of her tube and into the water, where her camera decided to take up residence for 13 years. She had just taken snapshots at her friend's wedding, so the memory card on her camera held a lot of important memories. Amayi was expectedly crushed. ... Spencer Greiner found the missing camera in the river on March 14, and after investigating the memory card, he decided to post the photos on Facebook in hopes of finding the owner. “I was walking along and saw it sticking out of the sand,” Greiner told Denver's KDVR. “It was in rough shape, so I really didn’t have any hopes of getting anything off of it, I was just planning to throw it away, and then curiosity got the best of me, and I had to see what was on it.” “I was like ‘yeah, this is probably not going to work at all,'” Greiner explained to KDVR. “But I plugged it into the computer, and it read immediately and I was like ‘oh cool, let’s see what sort of treasures we’re going to find on this memory card.'” After posting the pictures in a Durango Facebook group, Greiner actually got a fairly quick response to his list of questions that accompanied the photos. The groom from the 2010 wedding identified himself, and his wife then got in touch with the owner of the camera. From the ‘The Kids Are All Right’ files: Pediatrician's unfeigned ode to the 'empathy' of 8-year-old girls is oh so heartwarming “Eight-year-old girls are magnanimous. They're sympathetic. They're empathetic. They're emotionally mature. They love to help. They love to give. They love to do for others. They’re accepting of everybody. They always, they're the ones who see the sign for the lost cat and want to go find it!” he said. ... Milobsky even goes so far as to say that Congress should actually be made up of 8-year-old girls. “Honestly, the country would be a better place. I said what I said,” he quips. Others were quick to expand Milobsky’s ingenious proposal. One person joked in the comments that “congressional bills would be passed by exchanging friendship bracelets and pinky promises.” ... Not wanting to leave 8-year-old boys out, Milobksy posted a follow-up video where he praised their special superpower, otherwise known as “intense collaboration to accomplish something.” ... “If 8-year-old girls should be running Congress, 8-year-old boys should be running the Army Corps of Engineers.” Sounds like a pretty sweet deal. x Need another reason to love Shaq? Menacing snarl may be wrong The teeth on T. rex and other big theropods were likely covered by scaly lips, concludes a study published Thursday in the journal Science. The dinosaur’s teeth didn’t stick out when its mouth was closed, and even in a wide open bite, you might just see the tips, the scientists found. ... Recent depictions show big teeth jutting out of the dinosaurs’ jaws, even when closed. Some thought the predators’ teeth were just too big to fit in their mouths, said study author Thomas Cullen, a paleontologist at Auburn University in Alabama. When researchers compared skulls from dinosaurs and living reptiles, though, they found this wasn’t the case. Some large monitor lizards actually have bigger teeth than T. rex compared to their skull size, and can still fit them under a set of scaly lips, Cullen said. ... For a creature like a crocodile, whose teeth stick out of its mouth, the exposed part gets worn down quickly — “like someone’s taken a sander to the side of the tooth,” said another study author Mark Witton, a paleoartist at England’s University of Portsmouth. But when researchers analyzed a tooth from a Daspletosaurus, a T. rex relative, they found it was in good condition and it didn’t show that uneven damage pattern. A handful of years ago, I would have been hard-pressed to name any political leaders of countries outside North America, Western Europe, and Russia. These days, I can honestly say I am amazed and inspired by, and wish more world leaders were like, some of those I’ve learned about and reported on here in the GNR, such as Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand. (You might want tissues. Just sayin’.) x After leading her country through a terror attack, pandemic, and the birth of her own child, Jacinda Ardern gave her final address to New Zealand's Parliament. Their drug would prevent swelling attacks in people with a genetic condition called hereditary angioedema. Typically, treatments and drugs that utilize CRISPR take place outside the body. Cells or tissues are removed and altered ex vivo before being re-introduced inside the patient. In the case of Intellia’s drug, the edited media finds its own way to the liver rather than being injected there. The advantages are huge if such a drug could be proven to work well—a lack of hospital and laboratory procedures would save a patient thousands, and potentially open up the class of drugs to the lower and middle classes, or to those who are uninsured. “This is an important milestone for Intellia as it is the first-ever (investigational new drug application) cleared by the FDA for in-vivo gene editing,” RBC Capital Markets analyst Luca Issi said in a report on Inetllia’s stock, which rose following the announcement. Whild I don’t know of anyone with an opioid addiction, I am probably going to add one or two of these to my “take with me everywhere” emergency supplies in my backpack when they become available. Just in case. Life-Saving Overdose Drug Narcan Approved by FDA for Over-the-Counter and Online Sale The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the lifesaving drug Narcan for over-the-counter use without a prescription for the first time. The nasal spray containing 4 milligrams of naloxone hydrochloride can rapidly reverse the effects of opioid overdose and is the standard treatment in such emergencies. The FDA action paves the way for the life-saving doses to be sold directly to consumers in places like drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations, as well as online. ... “The FDA has used its regulatory authority to facilitate greater access to naloxone…to address the dire public health need,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D. “Today’s approval of OTC naloxone nasal spray will increase the number of locations where it’s available and help reduce opioid overdose deaths throughout the country. We encourage the manufacturer to make accessibility to the product a priority by making it available as soon as possible and at an affordable price.” ... “Naloxone is a critical tool in addressing opioid overdoses and today’s approval underscores the extensive efforts the agency has undertaken to combat the overdose crisis,” said Patrizia Cavazzoni, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The FDA is working with our federal partners to help ensure continued access to all forms of naloxone during the transition of this product from prescription status to nonprescription/OTC status. His reaction is beautiful...stick around till the end. "Coming from thousands of miles away, Dad had no idea I was right behind him."] I happily admit that I have spent many an hour watching surprise military homecomings and reunions over the years. I think my favorite was one where the soldier dressed up as Santa Claus and spent several minutes playing the part for his own parents before coming clean. Maybe, just maybe, sometimes the forest is the tree: One of Britain’s Oldest and Greatest Oak Trees Gets $7,000 Hug from Community A 700-1,000-year-old sessile oak, known as the Capon Tree, was awarded a grant of £7,000, or around $8,500, for a caregiving regime after one of its supporting limbs collapsed. ... In 2021 when one of its massive supporting limbs collapsed, the Jedburgh Community Trust created the Capon Tree Preservation Project, an initiative that raised £15,000 to beautify the area, and reinforce the tree with supportive posts to ensure it can continue its life. “While the Capon Tree is of national importance, its significance in the history and cultural lives of the people of Jedburgh is enormous,” said Jim Steele, chair of Jedburgh Community Trust, said. “We wanted to make sure that we were doing everything we could to prolong the tree’s life for future generations.” ... Ancient trees are especially important to woodland ecosystems. They carry knowledge, both genetic knowledge and a demonstrable, tangible sort, of how to survive all manner of disasters and difficulties. Their offspring have much higher chances of living through frosts, floods, fires, disease, or droughts. ... “The Capon Tree has been part of Borders life for centuries and still plays an important role in the region’s heritage,” said Fallago Environment Fund chairman Gareth Baird. “We’re extremely pleased that these windfarm-generated funds are being used to help maintain the health of this historic tree and enhance its surroundings so that it can continue to play its important role in the lives of people from Jedburgh and beyond.” The kids are the future and it looks amazing from here: x “They don't see him as "different." his mom writes. Bunny joins police force. Fur real. One of the biggest hurdles I’ve seen in the transition to EV vehicles, particularly large vehicles like SUVs, pickup trucks, and larger, is range. That is changing: New Ram electric pickup can go up to 500 miles on a charge The Ram looks more like the current gas-powered model than a more futuristic concept vehicle the company showed off in January. But it’s full of new technology. The Rev will come with a choice of two battery packs, the standard one with up to 350 miles (560 kilometers) of range and an optional larger pack with an expected range of 500 miles (800 kilometers). The company says it also can tow up to 14000 pounds (6350 kilograms) and carry 2700 pounds (1,225 kilograms) in its bed. The 654-horsepower truck also can travel from zero to 60 mph (97 kilometers per hour) in 4.4 seconds, exceptionally quick for a vehicle that size. Stellantis, which makes Ram vehicles, says the all-wheel-drive Rev can add up to 110 miles (177 kilometers) of range in about 10 minutes with a 350 kilowatt fast charger. The truck also is capable of powering worksite tools, sending power back to the grid or powering a home during an outage, the company says. It’s built on a new frame designed specifically for larger electric vehicles. I usually close with another music video, but this comes with its own soundtrack. And it displays so much of what some would commandeer for, and attach to, ugly, ugly things: Honor. Comradery. Brotherhood. Respect. Hope. Humanity. Love.
