The decentralized format can be a bit intimidating, and I had to look around for a bit to settle on an instance. Posts (annoyingly called ”toots”) can be liked or boosted (retweeted) like on Twitter, but if you want to keep track of how much interaction your post got, you’ll have to go looking for that info. The ambience is more about conversation than about going viral. Once I started following some writing hashtags, I was able to connect with other writers and enjoy. Post: This site seems mostly focused on journalism rather than socializing. When you sign up, you’re awarded 50 points, which can be used to “tip” posts you appreciate at one cent each. (You can still give them a thumbs-up or a comment for free.) Some of the commercial news sites require you to pay 1 to 3 points for access to an article. You can purchase more points once the promo ones are used up. Substack Notes: This one’s brand new, and so far my impression is a zillion writers with newsletters, all wanting you to subscribe. Most have both free and paid options. It takes time to build a sense of community, so we’ll see how this one goes. I haven’t tried Discord or Counter Social, or the very new Spoutify. Would be interested in anyone’s experiences with them. On to Top Comments! No submissions tonight. Folks, remember to send those awesome comments in!
