Life in our Banana Republic [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-13 ecently as the wheels are coming off the in the USA commentators are comparing this country to a Banana Republic and even a "failed state". That's maybe a little far-fetched but they have a point as we endure one mass murder after another and the Federal Judiciary looks increasingly self-contradictory and blatantly corrupt. While a sizeable majority of the public favors common sense firearms legislation such as background checks and mandatory training/licensing GOP legislators are trying their damnedest to silence anti-gun legislators or expel them. As much as I disagree with the basic GOP philosophy of rule by the economic elite I don't think the ongoing suicide of that party is good for the body politic. The Rs are not only out of sync with majority opinion on reproductive choice, arms regulation, climate change and Judicial conduct they keep doubling down. That said we can't wait for them to complete their suicide mission. Democrats, in control of the White House and Senate, can't seem to mobilize their opposition to misguided GOP initiatives. Getting the expelled reps reinstated in TN is a good step. Now everyone knows that, without control of the House, Dems will be unable to impeach the shameless Justice Thomas. So what! They should bring charges anyway to show that things will be different if they can gain control of the Congress. They should also introduce legislation to enforce a code of conduct on the SCOTUS, not to mention a regime of sensible Firearms Safety measures. (Don't call it Gun Control!) Come on Biden, Schumer, Jeffeys and the rest, do something!
