An active shooter report you probably didn't hear about. [1]

Uh, no. I can speculate on why someone would do this. My first thought was that it was the equivalent of the kid in middle school who pulled the fire alarm because it was “funny” to watch the entire school file outside and see the fire trucks pull up.

It’s far more complicated than that. It seems there was a rash of these calls, both in Texas and across the country. There was some thought that the calls came from outside the country. Okay, not even a really disturbed person would think this was “funny.” So what’s the purpose? Just being disruptive? Or getting us to the “Cry Wolf!” stage, where we don’t take it seriously and thus are easy targets? I have no idea. If you do, say so in the comments.

But there’s another totally separate problem here. As I pointed out to my daughter, every kindergarten class—hell, every preschool—has a plan for an active shooter, complete with drills that are supposed to prepare the kids but which seem to traumatize them instead. Well, not Collin County Community College. A mother sent this message. She tagged in every person who has access, so it’s a public letter available to anyone with access to that school’s website.

I have no comments. I taught in public schools for 43 years. As a child, I hid under desks to practice avoiding radioactive fallout. (That made no sense to me. I’d have to leave sometime.) As both student and adult, I’ve gone out for fire drills and huddled in hallways to avoid potential tornadoes. In the last decade of teaching, I practiced leading students through active shooter drills. I had no idea those preparations ended with high school graduation.
