Kitchen Table Kibitzing, April 14, 2023: Fashion has always been with us [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-14 My sister and I watch a lot of YouTube and we’ve come upon some very interesting people — I guess they are called influencers these days. Given our interest in historical clothing — and history, generally — these are people who study fashion history. (And some of them are members of the Catherine de Medici Time Travel Society — but I digress.). Allow me to introduce you! Cheney McKnight Cheney McKnight makes videos about the lives of enslaved people here in the U.S. and she gives living history presentations at various museums. Not Your Momma’s History is her website and also the name you can find her under on Patreon, YouTube, etc. (This is important work, consider supporting her!). When she lectures, she sometimes wears long dresses that are a combination of historical style with African or Afro American influences. This is how she imagined a dress for the Met Gala: Abby Cox Ann and I “met” Cheney McKnight through Abby Cox. (We watch a lot of Abby Cox videos.) This one is the two of them together. And it’s about weddings. ( Spoiler: don’t have a wedding on a plantation. Just don’t.) Here’s a lighter Abby Cox video — this one’s about hair. Nicole Rudolph Nicole Rudolph is a bestie of Abby Cox — and dear lord, the woman can make any item of clothing, she is that talented. She tailors clothes. She makes her own shoes. She makes hats! And on top of all that, she knows her fashion history in depth. Here she is on the history of arsenic in clothing and home decor. Karolina Zebrowska Karolina Zebrowska lives in Poland but is also a member of the Catherine de Medici Time Travel Society. Unlike many of the fashion historians who opt for a 19th or 18th century vibe in their personal dress, Karolina dresses in a 20th mid-century style mostly. But this video is not about clothing. It’s about bodies. Dandy Wellington Hey! Gentlemen have fashion, too! Dandy Wellington is well known for his vintage style (and he is quick to point out, not vintage values) and is a band leader in Harlem. Dandy also hosts great parties in New York — his Easter Egg Strut, an after party to the Easter Parade in NYC, is something people in and around New York can get tickets for! (I’m so jealous!). I could go on but I don’t want to overwhelm! The weekend begins now. Please come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus!
