The Dolphin Caught – A Poem for National Dolphin Day, April 14 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-14 The bottlenose dolphin is said to be the most intelligent of all the dolphin species. They eat a variety of fish, squids and crustaceans. I just wrote the following poem upon learning that today, April 14, is National Dolphin Day. The Dolphin Caught Haul the nets, crew, haul the nets! Damn that bottlenose, Why have sonar If you don't use it? Why let intelligence fail, By distraction, And get tangled In our nets, head to tail For some lousy mackerel? Separate her out, crew, separate her out We'll trade her with a ship Going East Where they still eat dolphin meat – Chopped and grilled or stewed, Pounds and pounds of protein In that mammal, crew. It is a sad thing, When the smartest dolphin Of the sea loses out On 20 more years of swimming life Dying in a fishing catch, But we have our own people to feed And profits to get, So lower the nets, crew, drop the nets Back into the deep, blue sea.
