Ghana News- Baby Melbourne was Starving [1]

Melbourne is a baby in Ghana, not quite two years old. His father is in prison and his mother has been trying to care for Melbourne and their two other children all on her own. Melbourne has been gravely ill and the mother asked my friend John for help.

We got the baby to the hospital and last night John told me that the baby has been treated. He was given two drips and is too weak to go home. The mother was allowed to stay with him overnight but they were due to be released today and hopefully this has already happened.

He was starving to death.

Due to her own medical conditions the mother, Agnes, is unable to produce milk for the baby. She has been feeding him what she herself ate (this is all she had; she is too poor for such luxuries as baby formula) and Melbourne has reached the point at which he had lost his appetite and had diarrhea.

It was not the mother’s fault. She was doing the best she could for her baby. She literally had no food to give him.

I wish I had words to say how horrified and appalled I am. Not with the mother but with the world. And with the rest of us for letting this happen. This baby was dying.

I know this is happening all over the world but that is no comfort.

I am hoping he will be okay. It will be hard to care for everyone this month, money is tight, but we will make sure he is cared for and fed. We cannot let anyone die.

God help us.
