Frankly, I’m not sure what to make of any of this reporting. Wealthy Republican donors are notorious liars (Remember how many pledge not to give money to Congressional insurrectionists? Within a few months, the donors were throwing money at the Republicans who were pro-insurrection), so take all of this with a grain of salt — or a mountain. GOP Donor Turns on Ron DeSantis After New Abortion Law BY ANNA COMMANDER ON 4/15/23 AT 6:00 PM EDT Sounds good so far, but let’s dive into the article. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is fielding harsh reactions from fellow Republicans after signing a six-week abortion ban into law on Thursday, with top GOP donor Thomas Peterffy being the latest to criticize the governor's law. DeSantis, who is widely viewed as a leading contender for the GOP's 2024 presidential nomination, but has not yet announced any plans to run, signed the controversial bill on Thursday after it was passed by the Republican-dominated Florida legislature. The bill, SB 300 or the "Heartbeat Protection Act," does contain some exceptions, however. In the case of rape or incest, an abortion is permitted up to 15 weeks if the woman can provide documentation such as a restraining order or a police report. According to NBC News, the new bill doesn't change existing exemptions for life and the health of the mother up to 15 weeks. Speaking on Saturday with the Financial Times, Peterffy, a Hungarian-born American billionaire, said, "I have put myself on hold," while discussing financing DeSantis' possible presidential bid. "Because of his stance on abortion and book banning...myself, and a bunch of friends, are holding our powder dry." Peterffy has given $7 million to Republicans, so he makes his fair share of contributions to the fascist party of America. But will Peterffy really stay on the sidelines when it comes to DeSantis? He says that he is looking at the entire field to see who has the best chance in the general election. And say by some miracle that DeSantis does win those early primaries and looks like he will win the nomination, does anyone really think that Peterffy will not fall in line and throw his money at mini-Mussolini from Florida? Me neither. But it is somewhat enjoyable to see some of those GOP fat cats spitting up hairballs when it comes to the superextremism of Republican leaders. If Republican donors really wanted to affect the primaries, all they need to do is coordinate and pool their resources for specific GOP candidates. However, corporate and wealthy GOP donors are big believers in the prisoner’s dilemma, except they never envision cooperation as desirble. It’s always, “I better give money to that cretin because I want a favor from him!” Thus, cooperation with each other to stop political extremists from winning primaries goes out the window. Speaking of political extremists, get a load of who thinks that DeSantis just shot his foot off: This from the woman who pushed for the overturning of Roe. It’s now a bad thing to go for a total ban when it drags Republicans to electoral defeat. So screw those fetuses! Power is the only principle for Republicans.
