I post a weekly diary of historical notes, arts & science items, foreign news (often receiving little notice in the US) and whimsical pieces from the outside world that I often feature in "Cheers & Jeers". OK, you've been warned - here is this week's tomfoolery material that I posted. CHEERS to Bill and Michael in PWM, our Laramie, Wyoming-based friend Irish Patti and ...... well, each of you at Cheers and Jeers. Have a fabulous weekend .... and week ahead. ART NOTES — an exhibition entitled The Rossettis — with works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (as well as watercolors and drawings by his wife Elizabeth Siddal) — is at the Tate Britain museum in London to September 24th. Boca Bacciata (1859) YOUR WEEKEND READ #1 is this (rather lengthy) essay by Rebecca Traister in The Cut — on the history of the abortion issue vis-a-vis the Democratic Party (with emphasis on the recent Michigan election success). YOUR WEEKEND READ #2 is this essay by a former reporter for The Tennessean — on how the latest escapades in the state legislature reflect the dramatic changes in the state GOP (from the Howard Baker era ... to this century’s crew) — with a “non-stop stream of befuddling scandals and unforced errors by a Republican super-majority that is … seemingly insulated from being punished for them”. THURSDAY's CHILD is named Darren the Cat — a shy Wisconsin kitteh who has been a resident at a shelter for eight years (with adoption fees being waived). Darren the Shelter Cat YOUR WEEKEND READ #3 is this essay in Vanity Fair by Gabriel Sherman — whose 2014 book on Roger Ailes was truly comprehensive and (amazingly) even-keeled. (He left out the sexual harassment accusations because he couldn't verify it by the publishing date. That was later told in the film "Bombshell", as the female anchors involved came forward publicly). This story is a behind-the-scenes look at our old pal Rupert — likening it to the TV series Succession — and even if you have no interest at all: this is a compelling read. One paragraph dealt with his sudden move to divorce wife #4 Jerry Hall: Hall told friends she had to move everything out of the Bel Air estate within 30 days and show receipts to prove items belonged to her. Security guards watched as her children helped her pack. When she settled into the Oxfordshire home she received in the divorce, she discovered surveillance cameras were still sending footage back to Fox headquarters. Mick Jagger sent his security consultant to disconnect them. FRIDAY's CHILD is named Mikan the Cat — who has been named as a station master in the Taiwan metro rail system. Mikan the Station Master BRAIN TEASER — try this Quiz of the Week's News from the BBC ...… and the usually easier, less UK-centered New York Times quiz. SEPARATED at BIRTH — TV stars Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian) and Nathan Fillion (Castle, The Rookie, Firefly). Pedro Pascal (born 1975) and Nathan Fillion (born 1971) ...... and finally, for a song of the week ...........................… yet again, life got-in-the-way of a full profile …. but here’s my favorite blues tune of the past decade. Mighty Mike Schermer has been a veteran blues guitarist for many years (in both the Bay Area as well as Austin, Texas) and was a fixture in the band of Marcia Ball (the Louisiana-Texas blues pianist and bandleader). At age fifty-five, Mike has a series of shows in Nevada and California lined-up over the next few weeks. In his 2015 tune Blues in Good Hands — he name-checks many of the blues legends he grew-up with and (later in their careers) opened for: guitarists Albert Collins, Hubert Sumlin and the saxophonist/bandleader Junior Walker. Add to that the notion of paying dues and tribute … it’s what the blues can be. The first note Albert Collins hit … took my breath away I went-and-bought a Telecaster … the very next day Drove his own bus … saw him change the oil once Taught me a lot about the dues you pay Hubert (Sumlin) put his hands on my shoulder Said, “Son, it’s up to y’all … now that we’re older” It made me strong … made me a little bolder Now I’m proud to be a soldier I remember the day Junior Walker died (1995) Seemed like Terry Hanck and me Were the only ones in that town that cried Page 19 … in the paper deep down inside Didn’t make the headlines … but goddamn, he tried To Keep the Blues in Good Hands And say something everyone can understand Something real … something everyone can feel Gotta keep the blues in good hands Every generation … as it gets old Say “the kids today … playing too much rock-n-roll” And not trying to hate … but trying to educate It’s all good … as long as it’s got soul So if you’re young, good-looking and play a bit Don’t try to be the world … be a part of it No one wants a ride … on your diva trip To Keep the Blues in Good Hands And say something everyone can understand Something real … something everyone can feel Gotta keep the blues in good hands [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/4/16/2163249/-Odds-amp-Ends-News-Humor-with-a-Who-Lost-the-Week-poll Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
