Officer-involved shooting: Nothing to see here! [1]

The local fish wrap had a story on Friday (4/14) about a police shooting in February that killed a 29-y.o. man. Officer-involved, indeed. Three sheriff’s deputies who feared for their safetytm shot a man who was likely suicidal. He had a gun, so maybe it was suicide by cop. Still, the State’s Attorney said no charges will be filed against anyone involved in the shooting. Because of course not. Story here. Caution: lots of b.s.

Far down, at the very end, was this quote from the state’s attorney.

”This incident shows the need for continued expansion of social and psychological services in our community.”

This is the first statement in the whole story that even suggests the victim was having a mental health crisis; a fact that was stated in the first news story about the incident. But that was back in February, you see, and the Herald-Whig doesn’t have an archive that I can tell. So, let’s just conveniently forget to include this information in the final article on the subject. The takeaway: the cops are our friends, protecting us from the bad guys who just might be crazy. And now, on to local sports! /s

I’m incensed at this. The poor bastard was threatening suicide. Someone called 911 to get him some actual help (also mentioned in the Feb. story, though not here). Not to have him killed. Do not call police when you’re in a crisis--they will make it worse, trust me. Source: personal experience. If you need psychological help, it’s safer to go to an E.R. At least people there will know what they’re doing.
