BBC Alabama shooting: Four dead at Dadeville 16th birthday party At least four people have been killed in a mass shooting at a 16th birthday party in the US state of Alabama. Twenty-eight people were injured, some critically, after shots were fired at the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio in the city of Dadeville on Saturday. High school senior Phil Dowdell, a star athlete, has been named by local media as one of the victims. President Joe Biden renewed his calls for tougher gun laws after the incident. "What has our nation come to when children cannot attend a birthday party without fear?" Mr Biden asked, in a statement released by the White House on Sunday. This shooting takes the US to a grim milestone of more than 160 mass shootings - in which four or more people are shot - so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. BBC Sudan crisis: Further fierce fighting between army and RSF Fierce clashes have been reported across Sudan as fighting between rival armed factions continues to spread. Violence between the army and a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continued overnight into its third day. More than 50 people have been killed, and one estimate puts the number of injured at more than 1,000. Both sides are claiming they control key sites in the capital, Khartoum, such as the presidential palace. Earlier on Sunday, they held a temporary ceasefire to allow the wounded to be evacuated, although it was not clear how strictly they stuck to it. The fighting is part of a vicious power struggle within the country's military leadership, which has escalated into violence between rival factions. The two men at its centre disagree over how the country should transition to civilian rule. Sudan has been run by generals since a coup overthrew the long-standing authoritarian president, Omar al-Bashir, in 2019. NPR An Oregon man threw money from his car, littering a highway with $100 bills Throwing money out the window has a new meaning. Authorities in Oregon say a driver was hurling cash out of his vehicle on Tuesday, leaving the roadside reportedly littered with $100 bills and prompting drivers in both directions to stop and collect the notes. The Oregon State Police and other local agencies received calls around 7:23 p.m. local time about money "floating" on Interstate 5 near the south end of Eugene, an OSP spokesperson said in an emailed statement. Responding troopers identified the driver as 38-year-old Colin Davis McCarthy of Eugene. McCarthy explained his largesse by telling troopers that he wanted to "gift" the money — roughly $200,000, he estimated. Authorities said there was no way to confirm how much dough McCarthy tossed. Troopers asked McCarthy to stop throwing money onto the roadway because it was creating a traffic hazard, and he agreed. No criminal charges were being considered against him, officials said. NPR A $7,500 tax credit for electric cars changed, again. These are the models impacted Editor note: This is why I bought my Bolt on January first. Regulations change. The federal tax credits for electric vehicles, which have been a cause of confusion for automakers and car shoppers alike for months, are about to go through another big change. Starting Tuesday, fewer vehicles will qualify for the current $7,500 tax credit. Some will get a $3,750 credit instead, and some cars will no longer get any credit at all, thanks to battery sourcing requirements that are kicking in. The new rules, which were announced last month, require a certain percentage of battery minerals and components be sourced from North America or a U.S. trade partner. They are meant to incentivize U.S.-based production and were a part of the massive climate bill that revamped the tax credit for electric cars. The official list of eligible vehicles will not be available until the IRS publishes it, which is expected to happen by Tuesday. NPR A former Indian politician and his brother were shot dead live on TV LUCKNOW, India — A former Indian lawmaker convicted of kidnapping and facing murder and assault charges was shot dead along with his brother in a dramatic attack that was caught live on TV in northern India, officials said Sunday. Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were under police escort on their way to a medical checkup at a hospital on Saturday night when three men posing as journalists targeted the two brothers from close range in Prayagraj city in Uttar Pradesh state. The men quickly surrendered to the police after the shooting, with at least one of them chanting "Jai Shri Ram," or "Hail Lord Ram," a slogan that has become a battle cry for Hindu nationalists in their campaign against Muslims. Uttar Pradesh is governed by India's ruling Hindu nationalist Bhartiya Janata Party. Police officer Ramit Sharma said the three assailants came on motorcycles posing as journalists. The Guardian China likely to rapidly achieve air superiority over Taiwan, US leaks say Reuters Supreme Court considers Christian mail carrier's refusal to work Sundays WASHINGTON, April 16 (Reuters) - An evangelical Christian former mail carrier's fight with the U.S. Postal Service over his refusal to work on Sundays gives the Supreme Court another chance to widen religious rights but also has led to a debate over whether religious people are more legally deserving than others to weekend days off from work. The justices are set to hear arguments on Tuesday in an appeal by Gerald Groff, a former mail carrier in Pennsylvania, of a lower court's ruling rejecting his claim of religious discrimination against the Postal Service for refusing to exempt him from working on Sundays, when he observes the Christian Sabbath. Groff sued after being disciplined for repeatedly failing to show up when assigned a Sunday work shift. The court, with its 6-3 conservative majority, has a track record of expanding religious rights in recent years, often siding with Christian plaintiffs. A ruling favoring Groff could make it harder for businesses to deny a variety of religious accommodations to employees. Al Jazeera www.aljazeera.com/... Activists delay Grand National horse race, 118 arrested The Grand National, one of the world’s most famous horse races, has been delayed after animal rights activists scaled fences around the perimeter of Aintree racecourse and got onto the track. A total of 118 people were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of criminal damage and public nuisance offences in a bid to disrupt the race, Merseyside Police said. Many activists from an estimated group of 300 climbed the high fences around the racecourse and got onto the track a few minutes before the race was scheduled to start. Some affixed themselves to the race fences using glue and lock-on devices, according to the Animal Rising organisation, before being taken away by police and security officials. Police and security officials were seen stopping other activists and shaking the perimeter fences to prevent others mounting them.
