[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-16 Last week, I was surprised when our two projects were completed pretty early in the day so, to give our latecomers a chance, I added this third project. This week, it’s not quite complete, but little enough remains that I’m again posting three projects today, knowing this one is not likely to last long. Its expiration date is coming up in a couple of weeks, though, so if anyone quite reasonably needs to make a choice, I’d say, let’s get this one over the finish line first, because the others have much more time. PROJECT #1 Project: Hands On Learning Is Fun Resources: Help me give my students hands on learning experiences for all academic levels. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Fox Meadow Elementary School, Jonesboro, Arkansas Total: $166.94 Still Needed: $ 85.47 Completed, thank you! Please consider other projects below! Project description by Mrs. Goodwin: One of my favorite parts of teaching is getting to watch my kiddos learn and grow through social learning. One of the ways that I let my kids learn socially, is through "center time". This is a time designed to give them opportunities to use their imagination along with what they are currently learning in the classroom. It is amazing to get to sit back and watch them use their unique minds and create and learn together. Hearing the conversations between them during this social time is always so rewarding, and the requested magnetic dinosaurs, the penguin ice blocks, the burger sequencing game, and number bots will be key to their learning at their centers. I always am amazed to see how much they need and crave this opportunity to learn and grow socially. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! This fun-looking game from this request lets kids practice filling different orders for “burgers” by stacking the wooden ingredients in the right sequence. x x YouTube Video This elementary school teacher in a small town in the “bootheel” of Missouri, along the Mississippi River, hopes to get her students building various kinds of solar-powered robots. PROJECT #2 Project: Robots at Work Resources: Help me give my students engaging and fun ways to enhance their learning through STEM activities. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Mathis Elementary School, Hayti, Missouri Total: $172.55 Still Needed: $ 172.55 $37.55 Project description by Mrs. Payne: With the help of these robots, students will have a more engaging lesson while learning about solar power. Students will be able to see first hand how solar power truly works. My students enjoy learning new skills. As their teacher, I look for every opportunity to introduce them to new learning experiences. STEM resources are great for fine motor, cooperative learning and team building. I love to see my students build and be creative together. The requested robot sets will be used in class, after school, in future summer school, and in public displays, influencing hundreds of students throughout its life. Because we are so small, we do not have a budget for robotics. With your help, all of our students will have the opportunity to feel successful. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! This is one of the ‘several-designs-in-one’ kits being requested. x x YouTube Video Immokalee is about 20 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico, roughly inland from Cape Coral. We see projects from its teachers fairly often, and good for them for trying to get the kids some resources! This high school teacher has already provided an aquarium for his students, and now it needs parts to keep it operating. PROJECT #3 Project: Fish Tank Replacement Parts Resources: Help me give my students important fish tank replacement parts so our underwater ecosystem can survive! Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Immokalee High School, Immokalee, Florida Total: $203.76 Still Needed: $ 178.76 $128.76 Project description by Mr. Rickard: Our town is a small, farming community located in a rural area of Florida. Our school is a Title I school in which 93.6% of the student population qualifies for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Most of our families don't have the extra money to provide pets for our students. I have provided a fish tank full of aquatic life so that my students can see nature every day. Students have studied the underwater ecosystem of the freshwater fish tank and learned how each organism relies on the others in this ecosystem. We are in need of new filters to keep the tank clean and a replacement lid to slow the evaporation of the water. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! A modest aquarium is donated to a Pennsylvania fifth grade, and we see how the kids react to coming in and discovering their new friends. x x YouTube Video Both of our initial two projects from last week were completed, with our readers playing a big part, as usual. Project #1, More Bilingual Books: Ms. McElroy teaches reading in a South Carolina elementary school, to children who speak many different first languages at home. She wanted books her students could take home and read with their family members. She writes: Thank you so much for supporting this project for some more bilingual books. Your kindness and generosity will allow my students to take home some books to read. They will be able to share their books with their family members. Many of my students have family members at home who do not speak English, so these books will allow them to share the love of reading with them. Thank you again for being so generous and kind. Project #2, Hatching Baby Chicks: Ms. Caulder wanted her South Carolina kindergarten students to have a chance to see chickens hatch. She writes: Thank you for giving my students an opportunity of a lifetime. My students are going to have the opportunity to learn about chickens, the lifecycle of a chick, and the responsibilities of taking care of an animal. We are so excited to watch our baby chicks hatch and grow. This is going to be an unforgettable experience and I can’t wait to send pictures of our class family raising a sweet baby chicks. DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required! Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1027! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
