At this year’s NRA convention, Wayne LaPierre continued his campaign of fear and outright threats toward any politician who did not toe the pro-mass-slaughter, pro-arms-industry-profits line. The idea that a this country is awash with civilian-owned military weapons because it’s needed to “defend freedom” was debunked decades ago when the U.S. acquired a standing army and the state National Guards replaced the “broken staffs” of local amateur militias (General Washington’s description, not mine). It is telling that these fantasizing hobbyists keep voting for politicians who aggressively take away freedoms, not protect them.
