Pro-Desantis Super Pac Runs Ad Attacking Trump For Lying About Desantis's Record On Social Security. And without further ado, here it is: Looky there! They plastered Trump for “stealing pages from the Biden-Pelosi Playbook!” And they also reminded voters that Trump has been indicted. They had a write up about all this in The Washington Post. One thing that is missing from the Post analysis is that the ad tells a lie about what DeSantis has done with regards to Social Security and Medicare. The ad has DeSantis claiming that Republicans will not mess with Social Security in March of this year, but DeSantis voted for cuts before “vowing” not to touch either in March 2023. Anyway, it’s the start of a pissing contest between Trump and DeSantis, even though DeSantis is hiding behind a super pac. And there appears to be no love lost between the two campaigns: Sunday’s ad is the highest-profile, and most direct, attack on Trump so far. It ran as a one-time ad buy on “Fox News Sunday.” It spotlights what leading Republicans believe are the vulnerabilities of the party’s most dominant, and troublesome, figure: legal challenges that can be distracting, Trump’s undisciplined comments, and worries about whether he is up to the task of challenging Democrats. The ad starts by reminding viewers that Trump is facing criminal charges, albeit from a “Democrat prosecutor in New York.” It then asks, “So why is he spending millions attacking the Republican governor of Florida?”… Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump’s campaign, said in a statement: “DeSantis is colluding with his globalist handlers to go full Never Trump in order to gaslight the people into thinking that Medicare and Social Security should be ripped away from hard-working Americans. President Trump has made it clear that he will always stand on the side of Americans, and protect benefits seniors worked for and paid for their entire lives.” The Never Back Down ad, which was first reported by Axios, also asserts that Trump is stealing Democrats’ playbook by spreading false claims about DeSantis’s wanting to cut Social Security. “Trump should fight Democrats, not lie about Gov. DeSantis,” the narrator intones. After showing a clip of DeSantis saying in March, “We’re not going to mess with Social Security,” the ad shows Trump saying entitlement reform “at some point will be” on the table, and “we will take a look at that.” Erin Perrine, communications director at Never Back Down, said in a statement, “The ad is right: what happened to Donald Trump?” I could see how comparing a Republican to a dreaded and vile Democrat would normally be a good way to hit your Republican opponent in a primary. But the times are anything but normal. And on Social Security, Trump is right about DeSantis. Never mind that Trump and the Republicans wanted to attack Social Security by cutting disability payments to poor childern. Trump is hoping that no one in the dimwitted media will pick up on that effort. But I remember it along with Republicans wanting to tinker around with disability requirements as another way to chip away at Social Security. So my rating for Trump and DeSantis on Social Security is a “plague on both your houses.” But we will have wait to see how effective this ad might be.
