Bernie Moreno launches U.S. Senate campaign to unseat Sherrod Brown [1] ['Rick Rouan', 'Rrouan Cleveland.Com'] Date: 2023-04-18 13:30:30.270000+00:00 COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno officially launched his second campaign for U.S. Senate in 2024 on Tuesday. Moreno filed paperwork last week with the Federal Elections Commission declaring candidacy, but on Tuesday he made his official entry into the Republican primary with an introductory advertisement. He joins GOP state Sen. Matt Dolan, of Chagrin Falls, as an early entrant into the Republican race to face off with Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, of Cleveland. It’s the second shot Moreno, a Cleveland luxury car dealer and businessman, is taking at running for the Senate. He ran last year in the crowded Republican primary that eventually sent U.S. Sen. JD Vance to Washington. But he dropped out of the race in February after a meeting with former President Donald Trump, whose endorsement was coveted by most of the field. Trump eventually endorsed Vance just before the primary, and he went on to defeat former U.S. Rep Tim Ryan, a Niles Democrat, in the general election. Moreno already appears to be an early favorite of Trump this go-round. Trump posted to social media that Moreno “would not be easy to beat,” noting that he is the father-in-law of U.S. Rep. Max Miller, a Rocky River Republican who worked for Trump in the White House. Miller is married to Moreno’s daughter, Emily Moreno Miller. Moreno’s introductory ad immediately invokes Trump. It starts by saying “Where are we heading in America? President Trump put us on a path to prosperity,” and describes Moreno as an “outsider conservative” who stands in contrast to “insider politicians.” After a bruising 2022 GOP primary for U.S. Senate, the 2024 race could draw a similarly competitive field. Brown’s seat is rated by Cook Political Report as a tossup in a closely divided Senate where Democrats hold the slimmest of margins. In addition to Moreno and Dolan, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose is believed to be eyeing a run. Moreno spent more than $6.8 million in the 2022 primary, FEC records show, including $3.8 million of his own money. “The Republican ‘slugfest’ for Ohio’s Senate seat is getting more crowded, chaotic and messy by the day. With a year of nasty mud-slinging ahead, it’s clear that whoever emerges from this primary will be bruised, battered, and out-of-touch with Ohioans’ values,” Ohio Democratic Party spokesperson Reeves Oyster said in a prepared statement.
