That’s a funny number. Half of the $1.6B lawsuit is $800M. $787.5M is $12.5M less. Why? I can understand why someone might insist on half. I can understand why someone might insist on “less than a billion,” but $12.5M less is strangely specific. It’s 1/64 of the $800M pretty number. Is it how much someone at Fox is paid and would therefore be the amount to buy out their contract? A scapegoat? Would it be a sight discount on the $800M for providing information to go after Powell or Giuliani? Legal fees associated with that? I’m not the first one to suggest that there may be more to the deal than simple money (from MSNBC): We may not know the full terms of the settlement, so it’s possible there are non-monetary conditions that we just don’t know about yet. But it’s difficult to truly assess this historic case until we know the full extent of the settlement. And if it is just the (huge amount of) money, without additional non-monetary action from Fox, it may be worth a conversation about how valuable this otherwise eye-popping settlement is. I smell a fish. Or something. Maybe a loofah.
