Just thought of a crazy idea [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-19 Here’s an idea I came up with to address the debt ceiling crisis: Wall Street is freaked out that the GOP is about to drive the economy off the cliff by defaulting on the debt. McCarthy can’t get a majority to agree on any proposal to address this that can possibly pass, and the Freedom Caucus is making crazy demands. No GOP member thinks he/she/they can afford to just raise the debt ceiling unconditionally, but many know full well that it has to be done. In order to get elected speaker, McCarthy agreed that any member can bring a motion to vacate the chair. McCarthy is seen as a failure by many on the GOP side. Hakeem Jeffries cuts a deal: if he is made speaker, he will introduce one bill: a clean debt ceiling increase. The GOP has security: if Jeffries tries anything else they can boot him immediately. A motion to vacate the chair is introduced. All Democrats plus a few Republicans vote to remove McCarthy. A new election is held. All Democrats vote for Jeffries. Enough Republicans vote present or are “out sick” so that Jeffries becomes speaker. Jeffries introduces a clean debt ceiling increase, good for at least a year. All Democrats vote for it. Almost all Republicans vote no, but at least five abstain. It passes. Jeffries resigns as speaker and the House spends the next two weeks doing about 40 votes before they agree on a new Republican speaker. Now, what happens to the few GOP members who make this deal possible, by abstaining at the appropriate times? There are probably at least a few who are either planning to retire anyway (and Wall Street might be able to provide a very lucrative retirement), or are in areas where Republicans are more business-oriented and less Trumpish. We only need about five.
