Instead of stalking my favorite haunts, I stopped at a random pasture (still under control of the Corps of Engineers). I walked the border between grasses and woods. I avoided the claws of Blackberry in full bloom even though that was where all the action was. Here is some of that activity. Silver Spotted Skipper — Epargyreus clarus on a Blackberry bloom I tried to get an open wing shot but this was all I was able to capture. When I got home, I remembered I had a shot from last year. Here it is. Top wing pattern of the Silver Spotted Skipper There were more sweat bees that I had seen in a long time filling up on nectar. The one below (like many others) had fed and dropped onto the path to rest. Sort of like humans are after Thanksgiving dinner. There were plenty of Bumble Bees and Paper Wasps swarming the flowers. Northern Paper Wasp — Polistes fuscatus An early spring migrant (and a little worst for the wear) this Duskywing found all the nectar it wanted. Other brown dots were too busy for photos. Horce’s Duskywing — Erynnis horatus On the ground, grasshoppers sprang to and fro. Common Green Grasshopper — Omocestus viridus another model of the Common Green Grasshopper (in a different color scheme) This mighty fine looking Dragonfly lit close by. I allowed me to get this glamor shot. Western River Cruiser — Macromia magnifica A few more butterflies flitted by to feed also. Little Yellow — Pyrisitlia lisa Common Buckeye — Junonia coenis I was able to get a photo of a (first of season) Blue Grosbeak. These are not the best photos, but better than none at all. Blue Grosbeak male I was ready to head home and saw some large dark lumps across the field. I was thinking they were wild turkeys until the birds set upon this pose. Turkey Vultures sunning their wings. I believe that covers my time today. Please feel free to add any observations of your own. I’ll be back later in the day to see how things are going. Until then, be well and be aware.
