She might wag her finger at you, Judge Kacsmaryk, be careful!! Per today’s Letter from an American, written by Professor Heather Cox Richardson (which if you don’t read, you should): News has also broken that federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who recently tried to unwind the approval by the Food and Drug Administration of the drug mifepristone, which is used for medical abortions among other things, misled senators during his confirmation process. He did not disclose that he had removed his own name from a law journal article criticizing protections for abortion and transgender people, and he did not disclose that he had given at least two interviews with Christian talk radio about his right-wing opinions about abortion, gay rights, divorce, and the sexual revolution, although he was required to. Kacsmaryk said he did not recall the recordings, but Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said: “You want to talk about the ultimate bait and switch? I feel like I got duped. I feel like I voted for somebody based on what had been presented to me. And you do this? That is totally, totally wrong.” Ok, so what’s next? Is this just another moment where Senators, red and blue, alike, wag their fingers and that’s the end of it? Probably, but I had a few minutes so I decided to do the one thing I know I can do: call and write my senators. Which, admittedly, is less scary than Sen. Murkowski wagging her finger, but at least I feel better about myself, ok? Anyway, below is what I wrote; use it, if you’d like, to write one yourself: “Dear Sen. XXXX (and the poor flak who has to read all this stuff): “How about a Senate ethics committee hearing or something about the extremist judge who we have recently learned lied during his nomination process. Ok, that's too vague, I know, sorry. I mean the TEXAS judge who failed to show the full extent of his extremism, under oath or penalty of perjury or whatever, during his nomination process. Oh, sorry, still too vague. The extremist Texas judge who lied during his nomination process AND who just issued that insane abortion pill decision. Yeah, that one. “I mean, it would be nice if the Senate majority did something—anything—to counter the Jim Jordan-led narrative coming from the House and that is dominating the news. I’d suggest trying to get Sen. Schumer to do his job and lead the Senate majority, but I know that being proactive, that trying to control the narrative, isn’t necessarily his strength, so I’m counting on you. After all, this judge is a lower hanging piece of fruit than that slime, Thomas, so maybe it’ll work. Give it a try? Please? “Sincerely, your constituent,” Like I said to the Senators, why not give it a try?
