Some humans are tall, some are short. Some have blue eyes, some have brown eyes. Some humans have curly hair and brown skin, while others have curly hair and white skin. You get the picture. There is a range of variability in the observable characteristics of humans. In the genotype humans are the same. They can all breed together. They are one species. Humans have characteristics that can not be observed in the physical realm. These are gifts from an unknown place, and among these mysterious attributes is the human capacity for empathy. Empathy allows humans to feel things. Perhaps to feel the pain of others in a moment of trauma. Some humans are highly empathetic, as if the volume was turned up way too loud. Other humans feel nothing. It is another example of the range of variability in a species. For the empath it is a wounding pain to harbor, even for a moment, the vision of what an assault rifle does to the human body. The empath is brought to tears by the thought of killing, and shares the pain of the victim. Consider the trauma experienced by those who survive, but watched an episode of gun violence, an act not just between the victim and the human holding the gun. The horror of gun violence is unwillingly burned into the souls of first responders, police officers, ambulance personnel, families, emergency room doctors, and the person who has to clean up the blood and guts after a shooting. This is the related trauma of gun violence that darkens the soul of our nation.
