We who support Ukraine need to be clear on the importance of that support. The obvious answer, of course, is When does defending democracy become your fight? When the war gets to Western Ukraine? The Sudetenland? Poland? UK? Long Island? But our problem is not so much the uninformed and indifferent. Our biggest problem at home comes from Americans who think that dictatorships aren’t so bad. 33% of Americans believe that strong, unelected leaders are better than weak elected ones. A similar number believes that "To protect the interests of people like you, political leaders must sometimes bend the rules to get things done." Too many Americans in positions of power fawn over dictators because they are "efficient" compared to the slow, messy, and contentious work of parliamentary democracy: None of these people give a damn about the average worker. They would gladly turn American into more of an oligarchy than it is, if they can land on top. The best way to stem this fiction that Authoritarian leaders are “efficient” is to expose Putin for the bumbling kleptocrat that he is.
