Some things have gone up a “mere” 20%, some things much more. Every Friday, my grocery store sends out an email, “What’s Free This Friday?”, usually featuring something I probably would never buy. Cookies. Cheese product. Packaged something-or-other. But there are other places we can make up for rising prices, by finding the freebies. Today, it’s books. Way back when the internet was new, I found Fullbooks.com. You need to know the name of the book or story to look it up, or you can browse. It has to be read online, and the graphic hasn’t changed in the 20+ years I’ve been going to the site, but there’s a wealth of things. All out of copyright, of course, for obvious reasons, or how else could it be free? Now, the go-to site is Project Gutenberg. It has thousands of out-of-copyright books that can be read in a number of ways. You can read the old-school way, online, or you can download to your ereader or the ereader app on your phone. (I do the last one, after I got tired of replacing Kindles.) Its interface keeps changing. You can also volunteer with Project Gutenberg, either to transcribe or to proofread. It’s crowdsourced. This would have been a real plus decades ago, when my daughter was in high school (she’s about to turn 53) and had left the book for her literature class in her school locker. The classics? You’d be pressed to find one from Western literature that isn’t here. It isn’t all fiction, either. Check this out for your area of interest. Lifewire has a list of sites with free books. The quality varies, so read carefully, but there are some audio books available. And of course there’s your local library. I’ve checked out ebooks online. They magically disappear from your ereader when they become due, so you don’t have to remember to return them, and they may have some very contemporary books. Just as with a physical book, they do have a limited number they can lend at any one time, so you may be on a wait list for some, depending on how much in demand they are and how many copies the library paid for. And while you’re here, check out this week’s Community Needs List. Our own Kossacks could use some help. Even a very small amount can add up to a big help. What’s happening in your world today?
