It’s me, Cat. A collection of misfit religious extremists is gathering in my neighborhood. They are talking about some covenant of men that took place on our coastline upon the arrival of about 100 men and boys from England in 1607. They called the location Cape Henry and considered it a First Landing here in America. So, these dudes came ashore, erected a cross, and said a prayer before being chased out of there by, surprise, the indigenous people who were there before them. I guess you didn’t clue them in on the surprise attack. You are a clever God. That prayer they prayed was led by the group’s chaplain, a man named Rev. Robert Hunt. This guy Hunt had just been forced to leave his parish, the second one he was forced to leave, for having an adulterous affair with his servant, as well as "absenteeism, and neglecting of his congregation". But I’m sure you already know about all that. Anyway, this group – using your good name – is planning this “re-covenant” on the site of Cape Henry in an “invitation-only” event. They, who happen to include Glenn Beck and Michelle Bachmann, say their goal is “to bring the nation back to its original roots when America was first dedicated to God … at First Landing, Virginia Beach.” And that “this will be achieved by a ceremony … near the First Landing State Park… a Declaration Of Covenant over America…,” “re-dedicating (re-marrying) the nation back to God, 416 years after its inception and repenting for the sins of the nation.” They want this to be a recurring event and even a federal holiday where we pray and fast and do everything the same way they do. Anyway, I think it’s dumb. So, just wanted you to have a heads-up in case you weren’t aware of this. You might want to send a cease and desist. Thank you. Ok, so I reached out to the big guy, and now I’m reaching out to you. This meeting of Religious Nationalists in my literal neighborhood – just came to my attention today. But for as shocking as it is for you to read, it is business as normal among the power elite in my neck of the woods. This part of Virginia is now in the newly drawn 99th District for Virginia’s House of Delegates and I am the Democratic nominee running against Republican incumbent Anne Ferrell Tata – AKA one of them. I’m not saying she’s going to be attending or is even worthy enough of one of their exclusive invitations for the event of 200 people. What I can say is that she’s just one degree separated, but we’ll get to her later. This area is saturated with the likes of those who think their version of God is the only version of God and they have some sort of responsibility to force others' knees to bow and others' tongues to confess. I know this because I had an intimate relationship with the Evangelical church in my youth and through my twenties – I’ve been on the inside and it’s an ugly place for girls and women and LGBTQ+. This part of the state is Pat Robertson Land, 700 Club Country – his Regent University seems to spit out graduates who revel in revisionist history and think they have a God-given right to lead this nation. Their new Dean of Government, Michelle Bachmann, failed Republican presidential hopeful, gay conversion clinic owner and the woman who gave us the below quote is on the list of speakers for the “Re-Covenant.” These are transgender Marxists — transgender Black Marxists — who are seeking the overthrow of the United States and the dissolution of the traditional family," Bachmann said in the interview on The Victory Channel, televangelist Kenneth Copeland's right-wing Christian network, while discussing the Black Lives Matter and anti-racism protests taking place around the country. But despite how entertaining this quote is, Michelle did not get top billing for this event. That goes to Glenn Beck. I’ll spare you my collection of superlatives about him. I’m sure you have your own. Insert them here. This one is a fave. "Finally, a guy who says what people who aren't thinking are thinking." – Jon Stewart, on the "The Daily Show” Just last week the misguided Mormon said this... “It wasn’t the nazis that were killing people, per se, it was doctors that were nazis that were killing people.” – Glenn Beck And in March of this year, he won a $600,000 bid to purchase the archives of Linda Coffee, the last living member of the legal team that argued Roe v. Wade. He said this to the Texas Tribune after the purchase, which he plans to keep at his Texas home, “We are fighting people that hate America so much they will destroy our history,” he said. “They will burn it. They will destroy it any way they can.” But hear this, Beck is adding the documents to his “German eugenics” collection, which reportedly includes the last prescription Josef Mengele wrote before his sinister practice moved to Auschwitz. This made me think… “conservative Christian, right-wing Republican, straight, white American…” male, Texas, Nazi fetishist perhaps? Yup. Sneaking suspicion confirmed. Here he is with Harlen Crow. That was a nod to Todd Snider. Now, here’s what Beck is bringing to our beach. And Here’s the prayer that Hunt prayed in 1607 and will be used during the Re-covenanting ceremony. We do hereby dedicate this Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth. May this Covenant of Dedication remain to all generations, as long as this earth remains, and may this Land, along with England, be Evangelist to the World. May all who see this Cross, remember what we have done here, and may those who come here to inhabit join us in this Covenant and in this most noble work that the Holy Scriptures may be fulfilled. Do I think it might be a dig at “The1619 Project” to call this “First Landing 1607 Project”? I do, I absolutely do. And for your viewing pleasure, my official campaign song – with permission and encouragement from Todd Snider himself. Little did we know when we started this campaign that song would get more and more relevant as we move along. Are you there God? It’s me, Cat, again. So clearly I’ve been obsessing about that thing I talked to you about earlier and here are a couple of takeaways. Send me a sign if I’m onto something. 1. No event sanctioned by you to rededicate a country to you or some version of you that these people believe in would be “invitation only.” 2. Nazis are bad. I await your sign. Thank you. I’m in a fight for the 99th House of Delegates District in Virginia and this is what I’m up against. My opponent is a Michelle Bachmann groupie, a forced birther, and a Faith, Family, and Freedom candidate with a tremendous amount of financial support. We need your help to get her dangerous ideology out of our House of Delegates. Please donate.
