GOP still very split on Ukraine [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-24 I’m pretty sure that the National Review is not on the list of must read sites for readers of the Daily Kos. (Heck, it’s not on my list of must read sites, and my political philosophy is libertarian, not progressive.) But this article showed on my news feed a couple days ago, and I thought I should share it with the readers of DK. One of the common themes I’ve seen in the comments of Ukraine stories is that (obviously) the minute the GOP takes power, it will cut Ukraine off at the kneecaps and kiss some part of Putin’s anatomy. And if you look at noise level from the GOP, it’s not hard to see why Progressives might think this is accurate. But National Review looked at the latest open letter from some GOP members of Congress demanding immediate peace talks in Ukraine. As the article points out, there were only 19 members of Congress who signed the letter. (Not 19 Representatives, 19 members of both houses.) There are 271 Republican in Congress, which means that barely over 7% of the Republican members of Congress actually support an immediate ceasefire, etc. And it’s possible that some of that 7% are actually concerned about the fiscal impact of the war, and not how it’s hurting their friend Putin. So concluding that the GOP will automatically throw Ukraine to the wolves may indicate more about the bias of the person making that conclusion than actually being based on data. But a much better question is why the other 93% of Republican members of Congress aren’t denouncing the noisy 7%. I know that my Congressman (Waltz — FL) is basically just ignoring the noisy 7%. His public statements are strongly pro-Ukraine. But given how noise that 7% makes, it would really be nice if he said they were wrong. Loudly. Unfortunately, as politics has gotten much more tribal, tribal identification has become more important than any sort of philosophical leaning. And so you embrace your “family” members, right or wrong. And that’s not good for the country, no matter if your tribe is Republican or Democrat.
