A Colorado State Open Thread, 4/24/2023 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-24 How many different signs can one dam store have? Where can one find this establishment? The Colorado State Open Thread has been without a quiz for awhile, so I went out today with a partial objective of finding a place to quiz my readers. I’m sure many of you have driven by this dam store a time or two (or twenty or forty). Because I was able to get here and back today, that will likely give some of you a hint as to what part of the state this is located in. Colorado has enough creativity to come up with a number of clever advertising messages; this just happens to be one of my favorites. In addition to this quiz, I’ll bet you can come up with some more locations which have some clever signs within our fair state. I invite you to post pictures down below of your favorite signs in Colorado, or anywhere, for that matter (this is an open thread!) or if you’d like, send me a photo of a Colorado sign for a future open thread and I’ll get it in as soon as I’m able. One last comment before we get into the meat of the open thread — I am going to go back to Thailand for the full month of August. As a result, I could use another guest host(s) for the four Mondays of that month. Please let me know if you’d like to write one or more of these, and if I cannot get one person for all four, I’ll work with however many people I do get to cover the posts. That, or I’ll post bare minimum stories or even just give people a break from me for that month. Now, to a few articles with a Colorado twist: — 2022 Republican candidate for governor of our fair, square, state, Greg Lopez, made it into the diary list as the Fanatical Extremist Republican of the Day. This was published just minutes ago. — Colorado could have passed additional laws restricting the sale and use of automatic rifles in legislation before the state legislature, but no, it was too far, too fast. I guess more people need to die. How many? Too soon to tell. DENVER (AP) — Colorado Democratic lawmakers killed an ambitious bill Thursday that would have banned the sale and transfer of semiautomatic firearms, citing promises made to their constituents and concerns over the sweep of the ban even in a state still reeling from a mass shooting in Colorado Springs months earlier. That was an article from the PBS website. — From the Colorado Public Radio website, all the way back on April 3rd, an article talked about other bills on gun restrictions — “Bills raising the age to buy a gun to 21 and expanding ‘red flag’ orders headed to the governor’s desk”. These should be signed by Governor Polis. Other ones described in the article did manage to get passed. These put in a waiting period of three days and there was a fourth bill that opened the gun industry to liability for reckless sales of guns to people who shouldn’t have the ability to purchase guns on their own (e.g. too young, felons, someone who used a straw buyer because they couldn’t pass a background check, and more). Other bills that have passed the legislature this session — a bill to cap the cost of an EpiPen (to fight allergic reactions like to bee stings, peanuts, medication) at $60. — a bill to outlaw examining patients while unconscious if the exam would need permission from the patient if the patient is conscious — a bill to ban local immigration center agreements (iow, a city couldn’t make a deal with ICE to license an immigration center if the state has said “no” to those agreements within the state. Well, this needs to be published, so that’s what I’ll do. Remember, please let me know if you have any willingness to do up to four diaries in August. Also, please post any funny or puzzling signs in the comments or, if you’d like them to lead off the diary, please send them to me by Kosmail or direct email and I’ll include them in a future diary. Until the future gets here, the floor is yours...
