This weekend on NPR, I learned about the organization O, Miami and its mission to build community around the power of poetry. The article I heard was about their O, Miami Poetry Festival, which takes place each April and aims to ensure that during the Festival every resident of Miami encounters a poem. They have SO many events, but the one I want to share tonight is their Zip Odes project, in partnership with Miami NPR station WLRN. What’s a Zip Ode? Think a type of poem like haiku, where each line has a particular number of syllables. In the case of a Zip Ode, it’s a five-line poem with each line having the same number of words as number in a Zip Code — 0 being a wild card of between 1-9 words. The poem should relate to the place designated by the Zip Code. There’s examples on Instagram using the hashtag #ZipOde, and also this from the WLRN page linked above: An example using zip code 33314 3 The iguanas are 3 the same size 3 as my dog, 1 and 4 it’s a little scary. Given the public nature of writing here, I’m not about to use Casa Brillig’s ZIP… but I gave my best attempts using my local childhood one, and also a famous Florida one appropriate for this site: Ode #1: 12498 (Woodstock, NY) 1 Near 2 Overlook Mountain 4 Visitors seeking Yasgur's Farm 9 When told "it wasn't here", response "you're hiding it" 8 Directed to golf course with other silly tourists [Yes, I spent my high school years doing just that. I have no regrets] Ode #2: 33480 Mar-a-Lago 3 An orange man 3 shared state documents 4 with racist fascist bigots 8 Seeking refuge here while felonies accumulate elsewhere 0 The ketchup remains safely hidden I’m acutely aware I should have left myself more time for this creative exercise. Say, days rather than hours. Still, it was fun doing just these two and I suspect I’ll find myself thinking about these in the future. What Zip Odes can you create? Places meaningful to you, or spots made famous by history or politics? Please share yours in the comments!
