American Valley, Quincy, CA. Bicycle ride yesterday. The Coyote was the wildlife grab of the day. No birds to mention, worth photographing. Lots of Canada Goose, some Sandhill Crane, skads of Steller’s Jay and Northern Flicker and Evening Grosbeak, but still not the one I’m waiting for a shot of this year, the Great Egret. I’ll keep looking. The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. I was headed on out of town a couple of miles, to a location that would get me down a bit in elevation, just enough to change the potential fauna and flora a bit, but I got turned around at the low river crossing by high water. My destination would have been about a mile farther downstream from here. But with the high water I don’t think I would have been able to get where I really wanted to go anyway. Such is life. Saw the Coyote only about a half-mile into the ride. Fair results, I’d say, given the distance. After the turnaround, I stopped to rest in a shady spot, and noticed something I’ve ridden past dozens of times without noticing before. An old and very short section of barbed-wire that two oak trees had grown up next to and then enveloped. Amazing how trees can do this. Barbed wire, in from lower right, disappears inside tree. The entire section is only about four feet long, between two oaks. You can just see the current fencing in the background, at far upper right in this photo. Now it’s your turn. What’s up in your world, nature and changes? Let us know in the comments and as always please include your location, and photos if you got ‘em!
