Due to the fact there has been little to no coverage in the mainstream TV news casts, this has been the only way to know what has been happening in the courtroom on a daily basis. Rachel did mention last night that closing arguments have begun in the Proud Boys trial which was the first time she mentioned the trial at all. The two other Oath Keeper trials got no coverage sans a blurb about the verdicts in each of them. Somehow I came across an interview with a juror from the third Oath Keepers trial who talked at length with C-Span about her experience and what she thought about the evidence, the lawyers, etc. It so happens she was a 30+ year employee of C-Span. Had I not found this interview, there would nothing out there about the third trial. If you are interested in hearing the interview, I am embedding the video at the end of the diary. One of the problems that creates this situation is the unavailability of having cameras or recording devices in federal and some state courtrooms. When it comes to cases of national importance like those involving an insurrection or national public figures, these trials should be exempted from those bans as the nation deserves to be able to see the evidence as it is presented without commentary. Since it is unlikely this will ever happen, I would propose courts allow for one or two people to live tweet/blog the proceedings as they happen. They could hire a lawyer, a member of the sanctioned press or even citizen journalists handle the task. I know there are transcripts of court proceedings, but as a lay person, I can never seem to find them. We now have TFG on trial in federal court in NY for defamation against E. Jean Carroll and soon we will have him on trial in NY for 34 felonies related to creating false business records to hide hush money payments to various women. We soon could have him on trial in federal court in DC for crimes related to stolen classified documents and inciting a insurrection as well as in Fulton County, GA for crimes related to trying overturn a free and fair election. These trials, while public, should not require people to stand in line to get one of the few seats available to view the trial in real time. I would include the now settled Fox defamation trial which also would have had no cameras but may have had live tweeting by the press. Not only does this limit the viewing public to likely less than 100 people but it only likely would include people who live in the vicinity of the court. Live tweeting/blogging can mitigate this problem, but the people doing it need to make it easy to find through simple web searching. These trials are too important to the future of the US to be hidden from the nation. x YouTube Video Diarist reserves all rights to his original writing only.
