If Hitler Had Died, or Trump Gone to Jail [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-26 During the final year of World War II, the British conceived a plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The plan was never carried out, in Wikipedia’s words, “due to a division within the British government as to whether Hitler's removal was a sound way to expedite victory”. But consider this: millions died during the last months of the war who might have lived. Anne Frank might not have died. Dietrich Bonhoeffer might not have died. Any sound strategist at the head of the German government would surely have negotiated a surrender on the best terms he could have got. That had been the plan of the cabal that launched Operation Valkyrie, the July 20, 1944 attempt to assassinate Hitler and bring a new government to power in Germany. By the end, even Goering and Himmler wanted to negotiate; only Hitler vowed to fight to the bitter end. What got me thinking about this was the myriad articles I’ve read here concerning Donald Trump’s legal woes. Do we really want to take Trump out of the race, I asked myself, and hand the Republican nomination to a fresh face? Joe Biden will certainly defeat Trump next year if it is a rematch of 2020; but how would Biden fare in a race against a younger nominee? The media will inevitably reduce the race to a boxing match, a clash of personalities, even though there is so much more at stake than which head will be crowned with laurels. They will do so because they’re in the business of attracting attention, and a boxing match turns far more heads than a philosophical debate. My inclination right now is to hope Trump is the GOP nominee, and my greatest nightmare is that Democrats working to take him out of the race will succeed, only to watch Chris Christie or Nikki Haley take the oath of office in January, 2025. In a chaotic system, intervention often produces unforeseen consequences. We can’t know what might have happened if Hitler had died in 1944, although it’s not unreasonable to suppose that if Georg Elser's bomb had killed him in 1939, there might be statues of Hitler all over Germany today. If only it were possible to indict the whole Republican Party as a criminal organization and keep it from nominating anyone at all for President. Today’s GOP is certainly criminal to the core.
