The Air is Leaking from the Conservative Bubble [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-26 Hmm, is America good for me? The recent firing of Fox News host Tucker Carlson should serve as a lesson on what withdrawal from a bastardized ideology looks like. The latest victim of the conservative drug coursing through the veins of backbiters, liars, and professional destructionist is former Fox producer Abby Grossberg. Yesterday she was interviewed by MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace, who kicked “that [GOP] narcotic” herself following the 2008 John McCain presidential campaign. Although some who once considered themselves unflappable Republicans, like former RNC Chair Michael Steele and Lincoln Project co-founder, and strategist, Steve Schmidt, are desperately trying to rid themselves of the stench of Trump. They long for the days when entering a room, people do not hold their noses. The rendering of garments of former congressman David Jolly, columnist Jennifer Rubin, pundit S.E. Cupp, and tv’s The View chatter, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Atlantic staff writer David Frum are only a few of the former and on-the-fence Republicans rubbing shoulders with the left for repatriation into polite society. Jolly is a mainstay contributor for MSNBC; Rubin’s conservative ideology supporting the Iraq War and opposition to the Affordable Care Act was featured in the Washington Post for years in her column. Cupp’s grasp was already loose, but Donald Trump broke her grip with his brand of conservatism. Griffin tries reaching for the elusive brass ring of reasonable Republicanism but recoils each time one of her other co-hosts reminds her of her time at the Trump White House. She looks relieved when Whoopi Goldberg speaks because she refuses to use Trump’s name, only addressing the former President as “you know who.” Being the recipient of misinformation is excusable, but knowingly using it to get what one wants has become a Republican strategy. The GOP is not satisfied with taking on water; they want to sink the good ship U.S. Once outed for trafficking in misinformation, especially that which caused loss of life, critics use to fade into embarrassed oblivion. Judith Miller, then a reporter for the N.Y. Times, was spoon-fed misinformation about Saddam Hussein’s nuclear weapons program by the Bush administration, who would then quote her as a reliable source on Sunday news programs in the run-up to the war. In light of recent events, Miller ending up at Fox News for a stint would be considered laughably predictable, if not so tragic. The GOP treating the U.S. like a battered wife, if I can’t have her… is now regarded as good politics. America is caught in the ever-tightening circular firing squad of GOP politics. The guns that were once trained on liberals by Liz Cheney, Joe Walsh, and Adam Kinzinger are now among the same people hoping Democratic Kevlar will save them until they can reload. Among the group of Republicans piercing the bubble, one can only hope they like the fresh air. Democrats cannot appear complacent or weak. Liberals must exploit the fissure in the bubble by being sharp, sharper, and the sharpest until, POP!
