The Supreme Court Sides Against Big Oil [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-26 Attrib: Johnny Silvercloud, CC BY-SA 2.0 , via Wikimedia Commons www.theguardian.com/… The US supreme court on Monday declined to hear bids by major oil companies to move a growing wave of climate lawsuits from state courts to federal courts. The appeals to move the venue of the lawsuits were made by Exxon Mobil Corp, Suncor Energy Inc and Chevron Corp. The justices turned away five appeals by the oil companies of lower court decisions that determined that the lawsuits belonged in state court, a venue often seen as more favorable to plaintiffs than federal court. Lawsuits against Big Oil have been piling up, with numerous cities and states suing for climate damages, in order to attempt to fund at least some solutions to the crisis, and/or to repair damages already caused. Those lawsuits have been held up by oil companies, determined to minimize damages while continuing to aggravate the crisis and greenwashing their climate “solutions”. This ruling looks to be an important step in processing those lawsuits. The oil companies are clearly concerned that they will be held accountable in places like CA, HI and WA. Biden’s administration, reversing a trump era position, has argued in favor of state courts hearing the lawsuits as no Federal issues were raised by the plaintiffs.
