Thermal Thursday: Justice Open Thread [1]

Today’s Topic: I was going to write about the benefits of releasing people without prison as happened during the Covid pandemic. But it turns out, that never happened wholesale. The GOP has been lying to us, quelle shock! A bit to my surprise, they are not only lying about huge increases in crime due to huge prisoner releases during Covid. They are also lying that there were any huge prisoner releases during Covid! The most “liberal” states released maybe 30% or so of nonviolent prisoners, most near the end of their sentences and/or medically fragile. “Conservative” states maybe 10% or so. Nobody released a majority of their prisoners. Arrests and prosecutions never stopped. (I’ll have those proofs with links for you next time.)

So I could not find the data I was planning to use to write today’s diary and it is almost publication time. So I turn to you. We want to greatly decrease prison for misdemeanours, greatly lower the number of minorities and the poor in prison, whilst also keeping neighbourhoods including poor neighbourhoods safe. Ideas? Leads? Linkies? Proof experimental projects work/will work on a large scale? Please respond in Comments. And I’ll make another stab at putting it all together next week. Thank you!
