Kirsten Neuschafer wins the Golden Globe on South African Freedom Day!! [1]

Yesterday Kirsten Neuschafer became the first woman sailor to win a single-handed race around the world and, for that matter, first woman to win an around the world race. She completed this amazing feat in her MINNEHAHA, a Cape George cutter. Kirsten is South African, loves her country and crossed the finish line yesterday on South Africa’s Freedom Day.

Her effort was a shoe-string from the start. She found a boat in Newfoundland during the Covid epidemic, worked with the Newfoundland authorities to enter, go through quarantine and retrieve her boat which she sailed to Prince Edward Island. On Prince Edward Island she rebuilt the boat by herself with assistance from islanders who became her close friends. She left PEI in a gale and sailed to South Africa for sea trials. In South Africa she performed additional refit with the help of her mother. Kirsten then sailed to Les Sables d’Olonne, France for the start of the Golden Globe. The race is around the world going easterly below the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. Throughout the entire effort she was constantly supported by her American manager and good friend, Alicia Biggart.

Three years ago, Kirsten hoped to enter the Golden Globe and win. Yesterday she won. Kirsten is an amazing person and has broken another glass ceiling for womankind. She is an inspiration to all who dare hope for humanity and believe in overcoming the odds.
