Kitchen Table Kibitzing, April 28, 2023: London will always be calling [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Backgroundurl Avatar_Large', 'Nickname', 'Joined', 'Created_At', 'Story Count', 'N_Stories', 'Comment Count', 'N_Comments', 'Popular Tags'] Date: 2023-04-28 There was a time in the 1990s when I was in London a lot — maybe a week or two every month. My job was to research insurance records for American companies who had lost their records — and as London insurance brokers were supposed to keep their records for seventy years and, as historically, most of the world’s excess casualty insurance ran through the London Market, there was valuable documentation to be found there if you knew who to ask. (I had lunch with a lot of brokers.) Through a series of circumstances that are neither here nor there, my business failed…in time for me to go home to my parents’ before their deaths. I was where I was supposed to be and I have no regrets about that. Now it’s been twenty years since I last went over the Pond…and I may never go again. I miss London. As much as I loved being there in the flesh, I do enjoy a bit of armchair travel. Here are some YouTube channels I have found and enjoy. I hope you will, too! This lady’s channel is Look up London. She is a blue badge guide and very knowledgeable. About 10 minutes Let me introduce you to John Rogers. He’s a writer and prolific cloggers who has a large body of videos on his channel. As a fan of Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series of novels (a passion I share), he’s been tracing the paths of London’s underground rivers on many of his walks. But here he is tracing the outline of the old Roman wall that defines The City of London. About thirty-five minutes Now this channel, RobsLondon, is a recent find of mine and I’m loving it. Rob used to be a London cabbie and he knows so much interesting stuff. Plus, he has an absolutely charming Cockney accent. Enjoy! About thirty minutes The weekend begins now. Come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
