Of the movies coming out today, at least one of them should have a review here on Daily Kos. Here’s some information about the movies coming out today. If you write a review about one of these movies or some other movie, please send a message to the Movie Review Group so we can reblog it. Spoiler-phobes, beware, I give a spoiler about a 1967 movie. I might also give spoilers about a 1983 movie. I try not to spoil the newer movies, but I can’t help it if the trailer gives spoilers. AKA — A special ops agent infiltrates a crime syndicate and makes an unexpected connection. Netflix only. Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret. — The next logical step for Ron “Meatball” DeSantis after banning books might be to ban movies based on banned books. Like this movie, with Abby Ryder Fortson as the titular Margaret Simon, and Benny Safdie and Rachel McAdams as her parents. x YouTube Video Well, maybe it’s not quite my cup of tea, I might prefer something more like Robert Bresson’s Mouchette, a 1967 adaptation of the 1937 Georges Bernanos novel. Though that would not be DeSantis’s preference, it does point as to why the Florida fascist might want to ban this particular movie. We’re talking about a movie written and directed by a woman, Kelly Fremon Craig, based on a book by another woman, Judy Blume, about a little girl who chooses to live, to truly live, with all the awkwardness but also the joys that comes with that, rather than accept there’s nothing she can do about the injustices visited upon her but roll down a cliff to her death (sorry for the spoiler for the 1967 movie). The DeSantis vision for America would give us more Mouchettes than Margarets. Judy Blume’s book is a timeless classic that is very timely today. The same might be true of the movie adaptation. Prochainement sur cet écran, maybe even in Florida, at least for now. Obviously I wrote the above paragraphs before “Bobblehead Ron” trended on Twitter. But even if the DeSantis campaign is indeed truly over before it begun, whoever the Republican nominee turns out to be, he is almost certainly bad news for our Margarets. There’s also a documentary about Judy Blume that came out last week. The Artifice Girl — What about using ChatGPT to bait and trap online predators? I’m sure this movie’s actually about a fictional artificial intelligence, give that this movie’s billed as a science fiction movie. Limited release, available for streaming. Big George Foreman — Biopic about the boxer and later grill salesman. The Black Demon — Normally, I don’t care about horror movies. But this one might have an element of environmentalism that elevates it above the typical shark movie. An oil rig inspector takes his family to a rig that is mysteriously empty. A legendary shark wants revenge. x YouTube Video Limited release. Born to Fly — A test pilot winds up in an unexpected mission. Limited release. Butcher’s Crossing — Are westerns making a comeback? A Harvard graduate moves to Butcher’s Crossing, Kansas, to hunt a buffalo herd. The movie takes place before the buffalo extinction. Came out yesterday. Clock — Something about a woman’s biological clock. Hulu only. Delicious Romance — Chinese romance movie. Limited release. The Eight Mountains — In the Italian Alps, a man reunites with a childhood friend to build a mountainside cottage. Might be a little too contemplative for my taste. Limited release. The End of Sex — The parents of teenagers at camp take the opportunity to try to liven up their stagnant sex life. They try a few different things. x YouTube Video Limited release. Exhibit #8 — Horror, came out Tuesday. Going Nowhere — From the blurb, it sounds like a more accurate title for this comedy might be “All Over the Place.” Came out Tuesday. Grand Knighthawk: Infiltrating the KKK — Documentary, available to stream on Hulu since yesterday. Invitation to a Murder — Crime thriller, came out Tuesday. Kill Her Goats — A woman gets her dream house, but also some uninvited guests. Available to stream. The Monsters Without — Something about monsters and a secret multinational organization, came out yesterday. My Happy Ending — A famous actor goes incognito to a hospital to get treatment for an issue she’s having. Came out Tuesday. Nuclear Now — Documentary about nuclear energy. Limited release. Peter Pan & Wendy — I haven’t seen any of the prior Peter Pan movies. From what I gather, this one delves more into Wendy’s backstory than previous movies. Disney+ only. Polite Society — A martial arts movie from India? I don’t quite understand the blurb, you’ve got to watch the trailer: x YouTube Video Then look up the showtimes. Limited release. Rebellion — Documentary about climate change protests in Britain, came out Monday. R.M.N. — Foreign workers in a Romanian town don’t quite get a warm welcome. New York and Los Angeles only. Sisu — During World War II, some fought the Nazis because of abstract principles like freedom. But some fought because the Nazis were thieves. The story of this movie is fictional, but quite plausible: a prospector takes on the Nazis because they stole his gold. Limited release. Snag — Australian movie about a man who had accepted that the love of his life died. But it turns out she’s actually still alive, she’s being held captive by gangsters. So he puts together a team and mounts a rescue. Limited release. Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi — Commemorative re-release of the 1983 movie. Originally panned as the worst of the Star Wars movies, Episode VI is looking pretty good compared to the prequels and the sequels. Not sure if this is going to be the original version, the 1997 special edition, the edit with Hayden Christensen spliced in as Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost, or some other version. T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets — Starring Ralph Fiennes. Limited release.
