Neither of us will find out who actually wins the bet until (you guessed it!) this fall. Then another ear-hustler into the conversation brought up...well, that topic. “You ought to be a sports writer.” Well. Even when I was a teenager, I didn’t want to be a sports writer, really, I wanted to be a sports bookie which, I will admit, probably entails having enough knowledge about sports that would be a prerequisite to being a sports writer. In this regular diary and other diaries on Daily Kos I have written on sporty subjects, particularly when those subjects intersect with politics or other subjects (e.g., this one). Some of my favorite writers, like Esquire’s Charles Pierce and The Atlantic’s jemele Hill write at that intersection even, and especially, politics and sports intersect. First of all, there’s only one sport that I would really even want to write about and that’s college football. Second of all, while I do tweet and even write about both sports and politicsts, I do prefer to keep a hard separation between them. Still, I do get sick and tired of people saying that I should write about sports. Not sure what I want to do about it; I’m busy enough as it is. One of my co-workers told me that he is ready to leave Chicago and return home to Florida. Florida? I don’t know what my co-workers politics are, of course not do I know why in particular he wants to return home although...maybe most people, at heart, want to return home. Returning to Detroit, my hometown? Never even considered it. The only circumstance that I would consider it is if my mother had a catastrophic illness where I had to take care of her. I’m...too nomadic, I think, to ever want to return to Detroit. Return to cities that I’ve already lived in such as NYC or Washington D.C.? I’d consider it. I’d consider New Orleans. One of the reasons that I have lived in Chicago for over 30 years is because Chicago does remind me a bit of Detroit but not too much. Detroit is a nicer place to visit than it was 15 or even 10 years ago and I enjoy visiting there. But move back there? Not unless I absolutely had to. Comments below the fold.
