Celebrate World Tai Chi Day [1]

World Tai Chi Day is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of April at 10am local time worldwide. Events begin starting in the earliest time zones of New Zealand, then, as the planet turns events unfold all across Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa, North and South America, and finally ending this worldwide wave of Qi and health education, with the events in Hawaii.

WorldTaiChiDay.org offers a myriad of FREE resources, including a Medical Research Library (with nearly 100 common health issues, and links to medical research on how Tai Chi and Qigong can help prevent, or even treat them. NOTE: Always consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise program).

I celebrated with my Shifu and classmates this year. We were originally supposed to meet at a local park with a big grassy open area, but recent rainstorms made that option a muddy mess, so we decided to do the next best thing and celebrate in the parking lot outside of the studio.

We started off with a Lion Dance.

The guy who plays the back end gets a real workout and has to have a really strong back.

That was followed by some demos of different weapons and forms.

Guandao — called a halberd in English. Basically a long pole with a sharp blade on one end.

Yang style 24 form

Jian (sword) 49 form. That’s me in the purple.

Chen style 18 Essence form

Double sword

And finally fan. Yes, a fan can be used as a weapon. There were sharp blades put along the edges and tips and it could be quite deadly.

Everyone was invited to join in and do some basic exercises.
