Herbert Austin had started building cars in his free time in 1895. In 1906, the new Austin featured a four-cylinder engine with a chain drive which sold for £500. A total of 31 cars were built in 1906 and production increased to 180 in the following year. In 1952, Austin was merge with Morris Motors Limit to form to the British Motor Company Limited. The Austin marque was used until 1987. 1936 Austin 20/6 Mayfair Body Limousines The Austin 20 with a Mayfair body was favoured by many royals and dignitaries as it was considered more reliable than the Rolls Royce. A one-way intercom allowed the passenger to communicate with the chauffeur. The passenger compartment featured side and read blinds for privacy and a fold-down “Dickie” seat for additional seating. Another interesting feature of this car is the Smith “Jackall” System which allows the car to be raised on jacks operated from the inside to facilitate tyre changes. 1956 Austin A35 Sedan The A35 was a small family car which was made from 1956 until 1968. About 280,897 were made. It was powered by a 34-horsepower inline-four engine. 1966 Austin Princess Limousine First introduced in 1952 and produced until 1968, 3,238 were built. It has a six-cylinder engine and a GM Hydramatic 4-speed automatic transmission. 1969 Austin 1800 Sedan This car was manufactured from 1964 until 1975. Austin America Austin Gipsy From 1958 to 1968, Austin built 21,208 Gipsy vehicles as a replacement for the Champ which had been produced for the Royal Army. This utility vehicle was intended to rival the Land Rover and was sold to both civilian and military customers.
