This illustrates transport issues currently faced by both Russia and Ukraine. RFE/RL is reporting today that Russia’s top commander in charge of logistics was replaced recently, just before a widely expected Ukrainian offensive. Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, was sacked from his post as deputy defense minister for logistics, reportedly after Putin’s recent visit to Ukraine where officers at the front complained about inadequate ammunition and other supplies. Mizintsev, who had been appointed to his post soon after Putin’s mobilization last fall, has been replaced by Aleksei Kuzmenkov, a former deputy head of Russia’s National Guard who is little known in the West. Mikhail Mizintsev, the Butcher of Mariupol, in September, shortly after he was promoted from Butcher to Russia’s deputy defense minister for logistics. According to the International Business Times, Mizintsev, 60, was responsible for the siege of Aleppo in Syria in 2016, and ordered the use of cluster bombs in civilian areas. He is also known as “the Butcher of Mariupol”, as he was associated with the bombing of the city and the targeting of its theater housing children, and the targeting of one of its maternity hospitals. Mizintsev’s current post and future fate are unknown. Although there has been speculation that he will be defenestrated or otherwise killed by Putin, my guess is that he’s been retired, or possibly demoted back to killing civilians.
