PROJECT #1 Project: Beautiful Birds Resources: Help me give my students bird feeders and bird food to view and observe these wonderful creatures. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Hollis Academy. Greenville, South Carolina Total: $173.45 Still Needed: $ 148.45 $73.45 Project description by Ms. Winningham: Please help to give my students bird feeders, bird baths and bird food. These wonderful items stick to glass to allow the observer an up close and personal view of these wonderful creatures. Our class has been studying birds and their mannerisms; these materials will allow us to have a close up and sneak peak view into the fascinating lives of these beautiful creatures. Viewing these creatures without disturbing them will allow us a preview into their true nature. We will use these observations to create journal entries using sensory details. At Cornell Ornithology Lab’s FeederWatch in Ithaca, NY, they attract a good crowd. (Of course at night, when I picked this out, there was nothing doing except the spring peepers singing lustily in the background.) x x YouTube Video At the same hour (10 pm ET), it was still light in Studio City, CA, at the home of the woman who runs this busy hummingbird feeding station, so I could confirm it was swarming with hummingbirds. See the FAQ on the video’s page for more about the species seen and other info. x x YouTube Video This elementary music teacher in central North Carolina makes it her business to provide books about music and musicians her students can read. PROJECT #2 Project: Music Book Bonanza Resources: Help me give my students some exciting new books that we can read in music class. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: North Rowan Elementary School, Spencer, North Carolina Total: $293.24 Still Needed: $ 193.24 $118.24 Project description by Mrs. Mitchell-Harris: As a music teacher I incorporate books in all of my lessons. Sometimes the stories relate to a song, musician, instrument, or social emotional lesson. I am doing my part to show students how important reading is. Books create a discussion and also help to reinforce concepts we are learning in music. Students get excited to see what characters we read about or the different types of music. My students have a love of music and now also a love of reading that will continue throughout school. I also have an area where I display different books about different musicians. Students who sometimes need a break to refocus will grab a book and read about a musician. I want to continue to show my students that reading can be fun and exciting. There are also so many different subjects that are available to read about and my classroom offers some of them. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! One requested book is this great Roberta Flack autobiography in picture book form. x x YouTube Video YouTube didn’t have a reading of the requested “Little Golden Book” bio of Harry Belafonte, so we’ll just have to recognize him here with this lightly-abridged performance with The Muppets. x x YouTube Video Both of our projects for last week were completed, with lots of help from our readers! Project #1, Stem Activities for Hands-on Learning: Ms. Halsey needed some materials to help her Ohio first graders with reading and with STEM skills. She writes: Thank you so much for your contribution to my classroom. With your help now, I will be able to bring some STEM resources into the classroom to engage students, in a new way of learning. Your donation helps my class widen their horizon and view of learning to be more fun and engaging! Thank you! Project #2, New Books for the Classroom Library: Mrs. Hicks wants her Arkansas high school students to have books that can help them see themselves, as well as others different from themselves. At this writing, the project was very recently completed and Mrs. Hicks didn’t know yet. We’ll bring you her note when she’s had time to react! DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required! Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1032! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
