Voters are deciding who runs services in 230 local councils - with around 8,000 councilors' seats and four local mayoral posts up for grabs. For the first time, voters will need to show photo ID at polling stations - passports, driving licenses and some other forms of ID can be used. Local councils are responsible for many public services, including schools, care for elderly and disabled people, and fixing potholes in some roads. Polls are open until 10:00PM tonight. Most importantly, this will be the first lead up to the 2024 General Election. www.bbc.co.uk/... The political system in the UK is dominated by two main political parties: the Conservative Party and the Labour Party. The Conservative Party is generally associated with right-wing politics, while the Labour Party is associated with left-wing politics. However, there are also smaller parties, such as the centrist Liberal Democrats, the left-leaning Scottish National Party (SNP), and the right-wing Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) of Northern Ireland, which have significant representation in certain parts of the country. The Conservative Party has had a strong hold in England, particularly in rural areas and among older voters for over a century. The Labour Party has traditionally been associated with the interests of the working class, trade unions, and the welfare state, but it has also sought to appeal to a broader base of voters through policies such as support for public services, environmentalism, and internationalism. The party's platform includes a commitment to a strong welfare state, progressive taxation, and public ownership of key industries such as energy and transportation. The current leader of the Labour Party is Keir Starmer, who was elected in 2020. Starmer is a former human rights lawyer and has been seen as a unifying figure for the party, after a period of internal divisions under the previous leader, Jeremy Corbyn. Under Starmer's leadership, the Labour Party has sought to appeal to voters who may have abandoned the party in recent years, particularly in working-class areas in the north of England. The Labour Party has a strong base of support in Wales, Scotland, and urban areas of England, particularly among younger voters and minority communities. However, the party has faced significant challenges in recent years, including a decline in support among traditional working-class voters, the rise of nationalist parties such as the Scottish National Party, and the impact of Brexit. The party has also been criticized for its handling of issues such as anti-Semitism and Brexit, and has faced calls to modernize its policies and appeal to a broader range of voters.
