As many of you know, Packrat and I raised our niece Kali from the age of 14. (You’d think a same-sex relationship would be one way to avoid accidental parenthood, but the universe has a sense of humor.) First-time parenthood with a teen is not exactly drama-free, and there were times when all three of us wondered if we’d get through it. All these years later, we get occasional hints that somehow we got it right.

Kali is all grown up now, done with college and working in a job that she loves. She’s been living on her own for several years. Now she has the opportunity to move to a larger, nicer place with a friend. She called us and we talked through the pro & cons, and it became clear which way she was leaning. All of our questions turned out to be issues she’d already thought about. But she wanted our opinions.

And for two people who never planned on being parents, it felt pretty awesome to know that, and to feel we had some part in the amazing woman she’s become.
